🐾 Henri’s Big Day! 🐾

This adorable little Cavoodle pup, Henri, came in yesterday for his castration — and he was such a brave boy! 💙

Castration (or desexing) is one of the most common and beneficial procedures we perform. Not only does it help prevent unwanted litters, but it also offers some great medical and behavioural benefits for our furry friends:

✅ Health benefits: Castration reduces the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease, and helps prevent certain hormone-related conditions.

🧠 Behavioural benefits: Desexed dogs are often less likely to roam, mount, or show aggressive or territorial behaviour — making them calmer and easier to live with.

📊 Did you know? Studies show that desexed dogs tend to live longer than their uncastrated counterparts, partly because they’re less likely to roam and get into accidents or fights.

💰 Fun fact for NSW pet owners: In NSW, the annual registration fee for an undesexed dog is significantly higher than for a desexed one — so Henri’s family will also be saving some money each year!

Henri is now tucked up at home recovering with lots of cuddles and TLC. ❤️

🇦🇺🐾 One of the coolest things about being a vet in Australia? You never know what kind of animal is going to walk, fly, hop or waddle through the front door!

This week alone, we’ve had a cheeky duck, a fluffy tawny frogmouth owlet, and a playful rainbow lorikeet come in for some much-needed TLC. 💚💙🧡

From beloved family pets to amazing native wildlife, every day brings something new and special.
It’s one of the many reasons we love what we do here at BVH — caring for all creatures great and small! 🦆🦜🦉

🎆 Fireworks Season is Coming! Let’s Keep Our Pets Calm and Safe 🎆

With summer and the festive season fast approaching, so too comes the fireworks — and while we might enjoy the celebrations, many of our pets don’t. Loud, unpredictable bangs and flashes can be terrifying for animals, and noise phobias are more common than you might think.

🐾 What does noise fear look like?
If your pet trembles, pants, hides, paces, drools, clings to you, or tries to escape during storms or fireworks, they may be experiencing noise anxiety. Even subtle signs — like yawning, lip-licking, or restlessness — can mean your pet is stressed.

🎇 Now is the perfect time to prepare
Don’t wait until fireworks are lighting up the sky — start helping your pet now! Early preparation can make a big difference. Options include:
✨ Behavioural training and desensitisation programs
✨ Anxiety medications or mild sedatives (when appropriate)
✨ Calming pheromone sprays, diffusers, and collars
✨ Natural calming supplements
✨ “Mutt muffs” or white noise to dull loud sounds
✨ Thundershirts or snug wraps to provide comfort
✨ Setting up a quiet, secure “panic room” where your pet feels safe

💚 We’re here to help
If your pet struggles with loud noises, chat with our team at BVH. We can tailor a calming plan that suits your pet’s individual needs — so everyone can enjoy a peaceful and happy festive season.

📞 Call us on 4945-9044 to book a pre-fireworks consult and start preparing early!

🐶 Meet Henry – our gentlemanly Labradoodle with his signature hairy ears! 🐾

Henry pops in to see us a couple of times a year for an ear makeover — a thorough pluck, clean and flush under anaesthetic. Why? Like many Labradoodles, he has very, VERY hairy ear canals, and all that fluff can trap moisture and debris, creating the perfect environment for ear infections.

Ear infections in dogs can be caused by a few different factors:
👉 Anatomical/structural problems – Hairy or narrowed ear canals, or heavy, floppy ears that trap warmth and moisture.
👉 Environmental problems – Water in the ear after swimming or bathing, or hot and humid summer weather.
👉 Immune-mediated problems – Dogs with allergies are especially prone to chronic ear inflammation.

The most common culprit behind these infections is an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast (and sometimes bacteria) that thrive in warm, moist, irritated ears.

Signs your dog might have an ear infection include:
🔹 Head shaking or scratching at the ears
🔹 Redness or swelling of the ear canal
🔹 Discharge or a waxy, smelly buildup
🔹 Pain when the ears are touched

For dogs like Henry, regular professional ear care can make a huge difference. A scheduled pluck, clean and flush under anaesthetic helps remove trapped hair, wax and debris, preventing infections before they start — particularly those linked to anatomical or environmental causes.

In cases of severe or recurrent ear disease, surgical options such as a lateral ear resection or even a total ear canal ablation can provide long-term relief and comfort.

Keeping ears clean and dry, managing allergies, and checking your dog’s ears regularly are all great ways to help prevent recurrent infections.

So here’s to Henry — for being such a good boy during his spa-day-style ear makeovers, and for reminding us how a little regular maintenance can go a long way in keeping those furry ears happy and healthy! 💚🐾

🩺 Why do we sedate pets before surgery? 😴

At BVH, every surgical patient receives gentle sedation before their procedure — and it’s not just to make them sleepy! Sedation plays an important role in keeping your pet safe, calm, and comfortable from start to finish.

Here’s why sedation is so important:
✅ Reduces stress and anxiety – It helps your pet relax before anaesthesia, making their experience much less frightening.
✅ Smooth, gentle handling – A calm patient allows our team to place IV lines and monitoring equipment safely and quietly.
✅ Better pain control – Sedation helps lower the amount of anaesthetic and pain medication needed during surgery.
✅ Smoother recovery – Pets wake up more comfortably and experience less fear or agitation after their procedure.

Your pet’s comfort and safety are our top priorities — and thoughtful, tailored sedation (with lots and lots of cuddles) is one of the many ways we make sure every patient receives the kindest care possible.

Thank you to Moana, Gaia and Annie for being such wonderful patients yesterday ❤️🐾

🎃 Happy Howl-o-ween from the BVH team! 🐾

We hope everyone has a fun and spooky afternoon!
Just a quick reminder to help keep your furry friends safe — secure them away from the doorbell action, loud noises, and tempting treats (especially chocolate and lollies containing xylitol and nuts or raisins 🍫🍭).

Also, be mindful if your pet is dressing up for the occasion, make sure they’re comfortable — if they look nervous or unhappy, they’re probably not enjoying the costume.

Stay safe, have fun, and give your pets an extra cuddle from us! 💚

🎃 Halloween Pet Safety Tips from BVH 🐾

Spooky season is here — but while the treats and decorations are fun for us, they can spell trouble for our furry friends! Here are a few simple ways to keep your pets safe this Halloween:

1️⃣ Keep lollies and chocolate out of reach. Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free treats), and nuts can all be toxic to pets. Make sure treats are safely stored away.

2️⃣ Update your pet’s microchip details – With doors opening for trick-or-treaters, there’s always a chance of a quick escape! Make sure your contact details are up to date on your pet’s microchip registry.

3️⃣ Avoid costumes that cause stress or restrict movement – Only dress your pet up if they’re comfortable and happy to do so.

4️⃣ Keep decorations out of reach – Glow sticks, fake cobwebs, and Halloween toys can be tempting to chew but may cause choking or stomach upset.

5️⃣ Create a quiet, safe space indoors – The noise, costumes, and doorbell activity can be frightening for pets. Give them a calm space away from the action.

👻 Keep Halloween fun and safe for everyone — furry friends included!

🐍 Snake Season Safety Alert! 🐾

With the hot weather upon us, snake activity is on the rise — which means a higher risk of snake bites for our curious canine friends. Snakes are out basking, hunting, and looking for water, and dogs—being naturally inquisitive—are often the first to find them.

Here’s how to help keep your dog safe this season:
✅ Avoid long grass and bushy areas when walking your dog.
✅ Keep lawns trimmed and garden debris cleared to reduce snake hiding spots.
✅ Walk your dog on-lead when exploring new or rural areas.
✅ Supervise dogs near water sources such as dams, creeks, or ponds.
✅ Consider a Snake Avoidance Training Course – these programs teach dogs to actively recognise and avoid snakes by scent, sound, and sight. It’s an incredible way to add an extra layer of safety.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake:
🚨 Seek veterinary attention immediately — even if they seem okay. Time is critical, and early treatment can save lives.

Stay alert, stay safe, and enjoy the warmer days responsibly with your pets. 🌞🐶💚

🌡️ Hot Weather Alert! 🌡️

Today’s temperatures are expected to soar into the very high 30’s — please take extra care to keep your pets cool and safe from heat stress.

🐶 Tips to keep your pets cool:
• Provide plenty of fresh, cool water and shade.
• Avoid walking dogs during the heat of the day - early morning or evening is best.
• Never leave pets in cars, even for a few minutes.
• Keep pocket pets like rabbits and guinea pigs in cool, well-ventilated areas out of direct sun.
• Watch for signs of heat stress: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or collapse.

If you’re concerned your pet may be overheating, call us immediately on 4945 9044.

☀️🔥 Hot Weather Warning for Pet Parents 🔥☀️

Tomorrow’s mercury is set to reach 39°C, and that means it’s time to plan ahead to keep our furry friends safe!

High temperatures can quickly lead to heat stress, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke — all of which can be life-threatening if not caught early.

🐾 Know the signs:
- Heat Stress: Panting, seeking shade, drooling, restlessness.
- Heat Exhaustion: Weakness, rapid breathing, vomiting, bright red gums.
- Heat Stroke: Collapse, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness. This is an emergency – cool your pet immediately with tepid (not icy) water and seek veterinary help right away.

💧 How to keep pets cool:
- Always provide fresh, cool water and shade.
- Walk dogs early morning or late evening – never during the heat of the day.
- Avoid hot pavements that can burn paws.
- Offer cool mats, wet towels, or frozen treats.
- Never leave pets in cars — not even for a minute.

🐰 Pocket pets like rabbits and guinea pigs are especially vulnerable. They can’t pant to cool down, and their small bodies overheat fast.
- Move their hutches out of the sun.
- Provide frozen water bottles or ceramic tiles to lie on.
- Keep them indoors or in a shaded, well-ventilated area during peak heat.

Let’s keep our pets cool, safe, and comfortable this week. If you’re ever unsure whether your pet is coping in the heat, call BVH for advice — we’re here to help. 💛

🐾 Kitten Update 🐾

About six months ago, a litter of five newborn kittens and their abandoned mama were brought into BVH in need of care and a lot of love. Our team nursed them back to health, and thanks to you — our amazing community — we’ve been able to successfully rehome five of them, including their beautiful mum!

Now, we have just one little tortie female left looking for her forever home. She’s incredibly sweet but a little shy at first and can be nervous around loud noises. With patience and gentle love, she blossoms — and once she knows you, she’s all about cuddles and playtime. 🐱💖

She’d suit a quiet, child-free home where she can feel safe and adored.

This little lady has been vaccinated, wormed, desexed, and microchipped, and she’s ready to make someone very happy.

📞 If you’d like to meet her or learn more, please call us at BVH on 4945-9044 — we’d love to introduce you to this special girl!
