🦷 Dental Health Month is here! 🐶🐱

Did you know that most dogs and cats over the age of 3 have some degree of dental disease?

Unfortunately, it's one of the most common health problems we see—and it often goes unnoticed because our pets are experts at hiding pain.

A professional dental scale and polish performed under a general anaesthetic allows our veterinary team to:
✨ Remove painful plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline
✨ Assess every tooth for signs of disease or damage
✨ Take dental X-rays (where indicated) to detect hidden problems below the gumline
✨ Treat painful teeth before they lead to infection or tooth loss
✨ Help eliminate bad breath
✨ Improve your pet's comfort, health and quality of life

A clean mouth doesn't just mean fresher breath—it can also help reduce the risk of bacteria affecting other organs, including the heart, liver and kidneys.

If your pet has bad breath, yellow or brown build-up on their teeth, red gums, is dropping food, chewing on one side, or seems reluctant to eat hard food, it could be time for a dental check.

🩺⚠️ Pet Owners: Please Stay Vigilant ⚠️🩺

There have been confirmed cases of Kennel Cough and talks of reported Parvovirus cases in the Geelong region.
Both illnesses are highly contagious and can spread quickly through our community. The best protection for your pet is to ensure they are up to date with their annual vaccinations.

🐾 Signs of Kennel Cough to watch for:
• Persistent, harsh or honking cough
• Retching or gagging after coughing
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite
• Mild fever

🐾 Signs of Parvovirus to watch for:
• Severe vomiting
• Bloody or foul-smelling diarrhoea
• Lethargy and weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Fever or low body temperature
• Dehydration
• Abdominal pain

Parvovirus can be life-threatening, particularly in puppies and unvaccinated dogs, and requires urgent veterinary attention.

If your pet is showing any of these signs, please contact us before bringing them to the clinic so appropriate precautions can be taken to protect other patients.

Keeping up to date with your pet's annual vaccinations is the most effective way to protect them and help prevent the spread throughout our community. 💜

✨ Did you know we have a dedicated cat-only hospital ward? 🐱

Our feline patients stay in a quiet, calm space completely separate from dogs, helping to reduce stress while they stay with us. With room for up to 12 cats, our cat ward is designed to provide a more comfortable environment for cats needing hospitalisation, monitoring or after recovering from surgery.

To help our patients feel safe and comfortable, the ward includes; Feliway pheromone diffusers to reduce stress, calming cat-specific psychoacoustic music for sound therapy, and dedicated cat-only bedding that is laundered separately.

Because a calmer, more comfortable experience can make a big difference to your cat's wellbeing and recovery.💜🐾

🐱🐾 Vet visits don’t have to be stressful for you and your cat. Swipe for our top tips! 👉🏼

Preparation can make a huge difference in helping your feline friend feel calmer and safer during their trip to the vet.

✔️ Choose a sturdy carrier
Hard plastic carriers with removable lids are ideal and help cats feel more secure.

✔️ Leave the carrier out at home
Make it part of their normal environment with soft bedding and treats inside so it feels familiar.

✔️ Add comforting scents
Use your cat’s favourite blanket or a piece of your clothing to help them feel safe.

✔️ Cover the carrier during travel
A towel or blanket over the carrier can reduce stress from sights and noise.

✔️ Keep the carrier stable
Support the carrier from underneath and secure it safely in the car to minimise movement.

✔️ Ask us about additional calming support
For particularly anxious cats, calming pheromones may not be enough. Medications or calming supplements may help make visits easier.

At Belmont Vet Centre, we’re proud to be a Gold Standard Cat-Friendly Clinic 🐾 Our team and facilities are specially designed to help make vet visits as stress-free as possible for both cats and their humans. 💜
