TICK PARALYSIS SEASON IS HERE

As the weather starts to warm up, we’re beginning to see a rise in tick paralysis cases — and now is the time to make sure your pets are protected. Including your indoor only pets.

Tick paralysis can be life-threatening and can progress quickly, affecting your pet’s ability to walk and, in severe cases, breathe.

Signs to watch for include:

Wobbliness or weakness, especially in the back legs
Difficulty standing or walking
A change in their bark or meow
Gagging, coughing or difficulty swallowing
Excessive drooling
Vomiting or retching
Rapid or difficult breathing
Collapse

Regular tick checks are essential, even if your pet is on prevention. Check around the ears, face, neck, under the collar, between the toes and anywhere else a tick may hide.

If you find a tick or notice any signs of tick paralysis, contact your veterinarian immediately. Early treatment can make a significant difference.

Prevention is key! Make sure your pet’s tick prevention is up to date before the warmer weather really kicks in.

Not sure if your pet’s tick prevention is suitable for them? Give our veterinary team a call — we’re happy to help keep your furry family members safe this tick season.

Stay alert, stay tick-safe, and keep those tails wagging!

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day - August 28th

Today, we remember the beloved animals who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge and left paw prints forever on our hearts.

Whether they were with us for many years or for far too short a time, their love, companionship, and memories remain a part of us.

Today, we honour every wagging tail, gentle purr, playful moment, and comforting presence that made our lives brighter.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

Remembering and loving them always. 🌈🐾

Fireworks Alert

With fireworks happening in our area soon, we want to remind all pet owners to take a few extra steps to keep your furry family members safe.

Fireworks can be frightening for pets, even those who are usually calm. The loud noises and bright flashes may cause anxiety, panic, or attempts to escape.

Here are a few tips to help keep them comfortable:

🐾 Keep pets indoors in a secure, quiet space
🐾 Close windows, doors, and curtains to reduce noise and flashes
🐾 Provide a safe hiding spot or their favourite bedding
🐾 Play calming music or white noise
🐾 Make sure ID tags and microchip details are up to date

If your pet struggles with anxiety during events like this, feel free to contact our clinic for advice or support.

Stay safe and take care of your pets 💙

MYTH BUSTING - Fleas and ticks are still active in the winter months!

As the weather cools down, pet owners sometimes become complacent with flea and tick prevention for their furry friends! Paralysis ticks can cause serious harm or even death to dogs and cats, including those that stay indoors. Indoor pets can still pick up ticks from you and other pets.

Here at Southern Cross Veterinarians, we see paralysis ticks year round. Please keep up with preventatives during the cooler months and act fast if you suspect tick paralysis.

Prevention is Better than Treatment.
✅Inspect Your Pet Daily: Check all over your pet, including ears, mouth, head, neck, and under their legs, for ticks.
✅Use Preventatives: Ensure your pet is up to date on a vet-recommended tick prevention.
✅Act Quickly: If you find a tick, remove it and contact your vet right away.

Symptoms to look out for:

🐾Lethargy

🐾Coughing or change in vocal sounds

🐾Paralysis in back legs

🐾Trouble swallowing

🐾Vomiting or gagging

Reception duties: paused. Rosa cuddles: top priority.

Our front desk team isn’t just here to greet you—they’re here for the slobbery kisses, the big leans, and all the love your pets bring through the door. Safe to say this gorgeous Rottweiler Rosa has completely stolen the spotlight (and a few hearts).

Our team doesn’t just care for your pets… we truly love them. From the moment they walk through our doors, they become part of our extended family. We celebrate their wins, comfort them when they’re scared, and treat them like they’re our own.

Every wag, every purr, every nervous cuddle - we feel it alongside you.

Thank you for trusting us with your best friends.
