Mare breeding!
Saturday the 21st was officially the shortest day of the year being the winter solstice ❄️
As we head into increasing daylight, it is a great time to start thinking about breeding mares. Yay! 🎉
Increasing daylight hours is recognised by the mares brain and she will start producing hormones to make her come on heat. ☀️ But, be patient… This usually takes at least 60 days of increasing daylight hours. That brings us to begin breeding around the end of August to September. 🗓️
It is useful to have mares on a rising plane of nutrition to help them cycle and conceive. 🥕
However, beware the rather large mare with a big cresty neck and a little more of her to love than is healthy! Especially, if she has a history of founder or laminitis. These girls may be suffering from a condition called equine metabolic syndrome, EMS for short. These ladies frequently suffer from infertility. 💊
Late winter/early spring is the perfect time to start considering your mares reproductive health. Scanning the reproductive tract with an ultrasound and flushing the uterus (if required) is best done prior to the time we intend to breed your mare. 🐴
If you have any concerns regarding your mares, for example, if she has failed to conceive, slipped a confirmed pregnancy or is a little cresty neck.
Please contact us very soon to discuss this so we can make sure your girls are ready for breeding season.
