Pet Industry Association of Australia

Pet Industry Association of Australia The Pet Industry Association of Australia is recognised as the peak body representing pet businesses nationally. Find us at www.piaa.org.au Our belief is simple.

Our members are retailers, pet boarding & services, pet grooming, aquatics, breeders, suppliers & manufacturers. Australia’s pet industry is growing rapidly, but with that growth comes complexity. Pet businesses today face rising costs, shifting regulations, staffing shortages and customers who expect more than ever. It is becoming harder to stay profitable and compliant while still delivering qua

lity care. The Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA) is the only national body representing the full spectrum of businesses involved in companion animal care. This includes retailers, groomers, breeders, boarding and daycare operators, trainers, transport providers, product manufacturers, wholesalers, pet service providers and education and training organisations. Commercial success and animal welfare must go hand in hand. PIAA works to:
Represent your business interests to governments and regulators
Advocate for consistent, fair laws that reduce red tape and support growth
Provide training, tools and resources to lift standards and reduce risk
Build consumer trust through recognised codes of conduct and accreditation
Offer networking, events and support to help you stay competitive and connected

Pet ownership continues to rise across Australia, and customers are seeking businesses they can rely on and reputation matters. Being part of PIAA signals that your business is committed to professionalism, quality and the wellbeing of animals in your care. Whether you are a sole operator or a growing enterprise, PIAA helps you navigate challenges, seize opportunities and grow with confidence.

PIAA has formally raised concerns with the Federal Government about the growing gap between state biosecurity approvals and Commonwealth live import recognition.

Good-faith businesses operating transparently under written state advice should not be treated the same as illegal smugglers.

We are calling for a proportionate, nationally consistent approach that protects biosecurity while restoring legal certainty for legitimate Australian businesses.

PIAA will continue to push for practical reform, clearer pathways and fair treatment for responsible industry operators.

⏰Big changes to super are coming VERY SOON from 1 July 2026.

Under Payday Super, employers will need to make sure super guarantee payments are received by their employees’ super funds within 7 business days of payday, not quarterly.

This means businesses will need to review their payroll, cash flow and super payment processes well before the changes begin.

Key changes include:

• Super will be calculated on qualifying earnings
• Employers will report both qualifying earnings and super liability through STP
• Late payment rules and penalties will change
• The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House will no longer be available from 1 July 2026
• Super funds will have 3 business days to allocate or return contributions

Now is the time to check your payroll systems, employee super details and payment processes so your business is ready. Download ATO's Fact Sheet here - https://zurl.co/NT4BK

Australia’s most wanted fish just got a shot at becoming legal.

PIAA has formally lodged a 58-page application with the Australian Government to add the Asian Arowana to the Live Import List.

Known as the “dragonfish”, the Asian Arowana is one of the world’s most culturally significant and valuable ornamental fish. But in Australia, there is currently no legal pathway to import, buy or sell one.

That does not stop demand.

It pushes it underground.

PIAA’s application proposes a strict, regulated pathway with mandatory CITES-registered captive breeding, microchipping, quarantine, indoor-only keeping, keeper registers and full traceability from farm to owner.

This is not deregulation.

It is about replacing illegal, unmonitored entry with a legal system built on science, biosecurity and accountability.

This is what PIAA membership makes possible.

No single retailer, importer or business could do this alone. But together, the industry can put evidence-backed applications in front of government and fight for practical, regulated outcomes.

If you benefit from this industry, this is your time to be part of the work that moves it forward.

See links to our response to the raids and full application in the post below. Note that we were only notified of this on Friday Afternoon, 29/05/26. 🚨🚨 From that point, we moved quickly to investigate the matter, engage with the relevant authorities and represent the interests of affected members over the weekend.

🦎 PIAA continues to stand up for the dubia roach industry. Learn why here.

Federal authorities have been raiding domestic dubia producers and seizing colony stock. These are businesses that operated openly, paid tax, and had written confirmation from their state government that what they were doing was legal.

PIAA has formally lodged an application with the federal government to fix the regulatory gap that created this situation, and we've called on them to stop enforcement action while that application is assessed.

This industry did nothing wrong. And PIAA isn't staying quiet about it.

PIAA is always in your corner.

We will keep members updated as this progresses.

Do you send branded SMS or MMS messages using your organisation’s name or brand?

The way businesses send branded SMS and MMS messages is changing. New rules mean that from 1 July 2026, sender IDs (the name at the top of an SMS or MMS message) must be registered.

If messages are sent using unregistered sender IDs, the sender ID will be replaced with “Unverified” and the message may be mistaken for a scam.

To keep sending SMS and MMS messages that show your business or brand name, you’ll need to apply to register your sender ID with your telco or message provider before 1 July 2026.
