As horse owners, we spend a lot of time and effort making sure our horses are healthy and well cared for. However, a simple mistake by a family member or neighbour could be disastrous.

In urban and suburban areas where your neighbours may not be familiar with horses, it is important to make sure they know not to throw anything over your fence into your horse paddocks. The same goes for any family members or gardeners who care for the yard. Grass clippings and trimmings from common landscape plants can cause major problems for your horses.✅ Read the full article here: https://www.horsejournals.com/horse-care/illness-injury/prevention/do-not-toss-yard-waste-over-horse-fence

🐋 Let’s talk Humpback behaviour 🐋

We often get calls about whales in distress so we thought we would share some normal Humpback behaviours:

🔹Pectoral Fin Slapping - This is not considered an aggressive action and may be a way of communication (or flirting) with another whale. A humpback can also glide along with their pectoral fin in the air.

🔹Tail (Fluke) Slapping - Also known as Lobtailing can be an aggressive action to ward off males or other prey. It can also be a way of communicating and another hypothesis being the whale is foraging, with the loud action of the fin hitting the water forcing fish into a tighter school and therefore making a bigger meal for the humpback.

Mothers are also known to invert with their Fluke out of the water when feeding a calf. They can do this for extended periods.

🔹Head lunges - When the whale lunges forward with its head out of the water. This is considered a competitive display when males may be trying to win the attention of a female. A humpback can do several head lunges in a row.

🔹Spy Hopping - When the whale raises its head out of the water. This can be as a visual aid or when they are being inquisitive near boats.

🔹Breaching - When a whale launches out of water with 2/3 or more of its body. This is considered by scientists to be done for several reasons being; a method of communication, a way of claiming territory, to assist in hunting and visual observation and for removing parasites from their bodies.

♦️If you are unsure whether a whale is displaying behaviours outside the above, considered normal behaviours, or you see a whale in distress please call the ORRCA 24/7 Rescue Hotline on:
