Dr Hugh and Dr Millie teamed up recently to perform a surgical castration on this pet sheep, Lambert.

Often, at a young age, lambs are 'ringed', which acts to cut the blood supply to the testicles, causing them to become unviable and drop off.

Often, pet sheep miss this step and over a certain age, castration is performed under anaesthesia to meet humane standards.

Lambert had a great nap and woke up 2 stone lighter!!

Dr Millie gave these two bunnies a thorough check over before their desexing procedure. 🐇

All our patients have a check up, including listening to their heart and lungs, taking their temperature and feeling for any abnormalities before any surgery we conduct. We also recommend pre anaesthetic blood testing on all surgery patients to further investigate or identify any potential issues. Especially as our patients can't tell us if they are feeling a little under the weather!

These bunnies were given the all clear and had uneventful surgery and recovery, retutning home that day.

All lumps are worth checking. 🧐 🔬

This small, yet unassuming lump was pointed out in a regular health check.
Sampling of the lump via a technique called Fine Needle Aspiration, and then looking at the sample under the microscope revealed characteristic cells known as Mast Cells.

This mass was a Mast Cell tumour, a skin tumour that can range from low grade to high grade in 'nastiness'.

We organised surgery promptly to remove the mass and did find another mass on an inner thigh at the same time, which was also found to be a Mast Cell Tumour.

After removal, the lumps were sent to the lab and fortunately were found to be low grade with complete margins, so spread and recurrence is unlikely. 😃

These two bearded dragons, Puff and Danny came in recently for a check up before they enter brumation. Nurse Lily was on hand to lend assistance during their check over as they were quite wiggly!

Brumation is a state of dormancy, similar to hibernation, experienced by reptiles and amphibians during cold weather, characterized by reduced metabolism, inactivity, and a lack of appetite. Triggered by lower temperatures and shorter daylight hours, this natural survival mechanism allows creatures to conserve energy, with common species undergoing the process including bearded dragons, snakes, and tortoises.

Before lizards enter brumation, we can check the lizards are healthy overall, including a check in of their weight. We can also run a faecal egg count to ensure they are parasite free before this period, as they will maintain or slowly lose weight during the process of brumation.

Dr Kylie gave them a good bill of health and they are enjoying their quiet brumation time as we speak.
