Some great news! Sabby’s first meal in about two months since his burn injuries. He shed a few days ago and all of his scabs came off. Still quite a bit of healing to go. 🐍

The dangers of heat lamps:
Even when you think your lamps are secure in the lamp cage, double check to make sure there are NO gaps. Small snakes can squeeze through just about any gap like a mouse through a tiny whole.

Snakes are not receptive to how hot something really is until it’s too late. The damage will be done before the snake realises it might be a bit hot.
These photos show the progress of burns over a month later. Injuries can take weeks to appear and progress making it important to always keep an eye on your animals.

Unfortunately for us, there was no way of us knowing that the heat cage had a gap Sabby could squeeze through. So we wanted to share our journey to make others aware.

Sabby has cream twice daily applied to his burns, 3 different types of pain relief injections on different days, spent 1 week in vet hospital, has been tube fed, will go back to the vet Wednesday for a feed and back again on Tuesday 8th for a check up. So far has cost about $1800. Is currently blind and will most like have his right eye removed at this stage.

The staff at Bird & Exotic Animal Clinic have given him such amazing care. We received daily updates via text and phone calls. The staff really care about the animals and what they do.

Through the whole ordeal Sabby has remained active, inquisitive, and calm. Although he doesn’t roam around his cage like he use to, he enjoys coming out and exploring the smells.
