Horse Behaviour Insight 🐴

A horse that avoids being caught is usually not doing it just to annoy you.

Sometimes the paddock becomes the only place they feel relaxed.

If every interaction involves:

pressure
hard work
confusion
discomfort
stress

…then avoiding humans can become self-preservation, not bad behaviour.

This is why relationship and connection outside of riding matter so much.

Not every interaction with your horse should feel demanding to them.

“Rushing horses creates more problems than it solves.”

I know it can be tempting to push for faster results.

Especially when people around you are:

cantering sooner
competing sooner
“doing more”

But rushing foundations nearly always shows up later somewhere.

In confidence.
In safety.
In behaviour.
In tension.
In trust.

Taking an extra week, month, or even year to build things properly is never wasted time.

A horse that feels safe, confident, and understood will progress far more smoothly in the long run than a horse pushed beyond what they can cope with.

Slow is not failing.

Sometimes slow is exactly what creates lasting results.

“A quiet horse is not always a happy horse.”

Sometimes the horses everyone calls “easy” are actually shut down.

Not all calm behaviour comes from relaxation.
Sometimes it comes from confusion, stress, or giving up.

This is why I think it’s so important to really learn your horse as an individual.

A connected horse still communicates.
They still show opinions.
They still interact.
They still think.

I never want a horse that feels like they have no voice.

I want calmness with softness.
Not silence through pressure.

“Confidence matters more than talent.”

I have taught riders with natural talent who never progressed because they were too afraid to make mistakes.

And I’ve taught riders who were nervous, unsure, and completely lacking confidence who ended up achieving incredible things because they kept showing up and trying anyway.

Confidence changes how people ride.
How they handle challenges.
How they communicate with their horse.
How willing they are to learn.

Talent might help someone start.
But confidence, consistency, and willingness to keep learning are what carry people forward long term.

You do not have to be the most talented rider in the arena to build a beautiful partnership with your horse.

What’s one thing your horse has taught you recently?

A horse that keeps moving their feet is not always being “disrespectful.”

Sometimes movement is communication.

Horses move when they are:

unsure
anxious
looking for answers
trying to release pressure
struggling to stand mentally still

Instead of immediately correcting the movement, I often like to ask:
Why does the horse feel the need to move?

Because behaviour makes a lot more sense when we look at the emotion underneath it.
