German Shepherd Day celebrates this iconic breed. The German Shepherd Dog originates from herding breeds in Germany in the late 1800’s. The first imports of this breed arrived in Australia in 1904 but in 1928 the Federal Government banned the importation of German Shepherds. This ban was lifted in 1972 and since then there has been a huge surge in popularity.

This breed of dog is renowned for its loyalty, trustworthiness, and versatility. The German Shepherd should be confident and outgoing. This breed does have an innate natural ability to guard people and property.

The German Shepherd is on the larger side of medium and is a strong well-muscled dog. They can act as a guardian, herder, tracker, guide and trusted companion. Their colour can vary from black and tan (gold), sable (red or grey) and black. This colour contributed to camouflaging the dog when it was working in the fields or blending in at night.

There are two varieties, the stock coat and the long stock coat. Both have a water-resistant coat and a minimum of weekly grooming is required to maintain their coats.

The Germen Shepherd is a suitable dog for an active owner who is prepared to exercise their dog appropriately. Plenty of space at home is recommended and good socialisation is required from an early age. This breed is generally good with other dogs and cats once acquainted, if socialised well as a puppy.

This breed cannot be left at home for hours on end and requires stimulation and constant training. A well-mannered German Shepherd is one of the finest companions you can have but an unruly German Shepherd will have you at your wits end.

**Follow this post and share with other local pet-parents for more updated information as we find out more.**

In the last week we have had a confirmed diagnosis of leptospira interrogans (italics) servoar copenhageni in a dog living local to the Maroondah area. Although he and his family fought hard, sadly the dog was extremely unwell due to both liver and kidney failure and unable to be saved.

Bayswater has also recently had a confirmed case of leptospirosis in a dog. We do not know of other confirmed cases in Eastern Melbourne, however, it is possible that the disease is being seen but not confirmed.

***Leptospirosis can cause severe illness in people and can be lethal in dogs and cats.*** Because of the severity of disease this bacteria causes, as well as its ability to spread between people and animals, all cases must be reported to the Department of Agriculture immediately.

This bacteria is more commonly seen in the humid conditions of Northern Queensland, and quite rarely seen in the southern states. However, in the past few months, there has been a spike of cases confirmed in central Sydney and now the Bayswater and Maroondah area.

At this stage, we have created a brief infographic to help you reduce the risk of exposure to your beloved pet. We sincerely hope we don’t see any more cases in the near future.

Rest-assured we are surveilling the situation extremely carefully to make sure we keep your pets safe and healthy. We will be updating this post regularly to keep you in the loop.

**Please share this post and spread awareness if you know of any pet parents in Eastern Melbourne.**
