Over the next month we will be undergoing a new computer system. Please make sure you are patient with all staff as we navigate through these changes. We will endeavour to make sure that everyday running of the hospital will be impacted as little as possible. Attention Rabbit Owners!

The NSW Government will be releasing rabbit Calicivirus strain (RHDV1-K5) through the first week of March 2026. This is to help control the wild rabbit populations through the Illawarra and Greater Sydney Area.

Your Village Vet recommends to keep your rabbits safe by Vaccinating or checking if your rabbit is due for booster vaccinations before March 1st 2026.

Rabbit Calicivirus spreads easily through biting insects (Mosquitoes and Flies) also through any contaminated surfaces or grass. Indoor rabbits are also at risk, by owners simply walking through contaminated grass or bring in grass that has been exposed to wild rabbits.

Calicivirus attaches the liver and is often fatal.
Common Symptoms include:
* Lethargy
*Loss of appetite
*Reduced feacal output
other systems may included pale gums, difficulty breathing, nosebleeds, or bleeding from other areas.

Vaccinations can be give as a single vaccination from 10 weeks of age; an annual booster should be given every 12 months for life.

For dog owners in Wollongong

Unfortunately, we recently had a positive case of leptospirosis.

The dog became unwell quite suddenly and despite hospitalisation, deteriorated quickly, resulting in euthanasia. A beautiful young dog who was a very much loved member of a family who are devastated.

Leptospirosis is a bacteria spread in rats urine. It can be contracted by dogs who catch infected rats or swimming in or drinking stagnant water contaminated with rats urine. The symptoms can include lethargy, inappetance, diarrhoea/vomiting, jaundice. It can lead to multiple organ failure and death. It's also zoonotic - meaning it can pass on to people as well.

As always, if your dog becomes unwell let us know ASAP but especially if they have a history of catching rats or contact with stagnant water.

We have been offering the Nobivac Lepto2 vaccine with all core dog vaccinations but if your dog hasn't been vaccinated before they should be started ASAP (one vaccine + booster in one month).

Important information for your pet's microchip and registration

Council now require you to pay registration for your dog or cat by 12 weeks of age or immediately upon taking ownership (whichever happens first)

This has recently changed from registering your pet at 6 months of age.

Failure to do so could result in late fees and fines for having an unregistered animal.
