To many pets, fireworks feel like a threat.
Not a celebration; a sudden, loud, unpredictable storm of sound and scent and light they canโt make sense of.
Dogs may shake, pant, hide, or pace.
Cats vanish under beds or bolt through doors.
Birds flee into windows or trees they can't return from.
Even wildlife freezes, scatters, or abandons their young.
The truth is, animals don't know itโs New Yearโs Eve.
They only know the world just got loud. And bright. And unsafe.
So, if you're someone who already keeps your pets indoors on nights like this; who sets up a quiet room, turns the music up just a little, stays in rather than going out; youโre not overreacting.
You're not silly.
You're seen.
And if this is the first time youโre hearing it, thatโs okay too.
Youโre here now. And now is a good place to start.
โจ Some ways to help:
โข Bring pets indoors before fireworks begin
โข Create a quiet, dimly lit room with familiar bedding
โข Play calm music or leave the TV on to mask noise
โข Make sure windows, doors, and fences are secure
โข Keep festive foods, chocolates, wrappings, and small objects safely out of reach
โข Sit with them if you can. If not, make sure they have a place that feels safe.
Some pets just need to know someoneโs there.
And tonight, that someone is probably you.
From all of us at Windaroo Vet - thank you.
For caring.
For noticing.
For being the calm they need when the world gets too loud.
