Specialist Surgeon Dr Nic Bimson recently attended the 2026 National Equine Veterinary Technology Conference in Beijing, where he presented on the topic of colic surgery.

The conference provided a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and connect with colleagues from across the equine veterinary industry.

It was nice to see some familiar faces at the conference. Dr Valentina Di Sevo former Clinical Anaesthetist at Scone Equine Hospital, who is currently studying to further her professional veterinary career and Dr Shirley Wang, a former Scone Equine Hospital intern and resident trained in Equine Medicine, both of who were also presenting at the conference.

Avenel Equine Hospital is a full-service referral equine hospital located in the heart of Victoria’s Thoroughbred breeding region. The practice offers a comprehensive On Farm service to equine clients in the local area (Avenel, Nagambie, Seymour and Euroa) as well as intensive care and surgical services at our new purpose-built hospital.

The Role 🐴
Horse handler/stable hands are required for Avenel Equine Hospital in Avenel, Victoria. These positions are casual with the possibility of ongoing permanent work. Hours of work are flexible. The physical requirements of this role include lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.

Skills and Experience
✅ Experience with feeding, watering stabled horses, mucking out, power washing
✅ Previous horse handling experience is essential
✅ Ability to confidently work around young horses is desirable
✅ General yard maintenance
✅ Prioritise and work effectively within a team

Over the weekend, we were proud to host the VetPD - Veterinary Professional Development workshop, Beyond Basics: Practical Advanced Medical Ultrasound.

The two-day course brought together veterinarians for hands-on learning focused on advanced equine ultrasound techniques and practical case-based training.

Delighted to see 'Ziva' back on track! 💙

You may remember the beautiful photos we shared of Ziva back in 2024 after she presented to Avenel with colic signs and underwent surgery.

Ziva re-presented to the Hospital with colic signs again in January 2026 during the difficult week of the Victorian bushfires. She was managed medically and thankfully discharged home before the fires came closer to Avenel.

Since then, we have been thrilled to receive an update from her owners, Leanne and Sarah, who kindly shared these stunning photos of Sarah and Ziva competing at the NVSJC World Cup in March.

The pair had an incredible weekend:
🏅 Winners of a 90cm class on Friday
🏅 Winners of a 95cm class on Saturday
🥈 Second place in the 105cm class on Sunday

An enormous achievement and huge progress since 2024, with only one rail down across the entire weekend.

Big congratulations to Sarah and Ziva! We wish you both continued success and can’t wait to follow your journey.

There are a variety of nursing roles that are stimulating and fast paced but well supported by an experienced team of specialists, interns, nurses and horse handlers. These positions would suit both early-in-career nurses and also experienced nurses looking to take the next step in their equine nursing careers and to gain experience in a high case load hospital.

ICU, critical care and surgical nursing positions are for immediate start, offering flexible casual shifts up to full time hours. This is a supported role with ongoing training from experienced nurses and veterinarians.

Skills and Experience
✅ Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
✅ Experience in an on-farm hospital or equine hospital
✅ The ability to work confidently around young foals
✅ Prioritise and work effectively within a team

What an incredible community effort! 💙

Following the recent Avenel Equine Hospital Fundraising Event, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that together we raised over $22,000, which will be equally donated to our two chosen charities — the Parkinson's Foundation and Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia (RDAA).

This event would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from so many people. A huge thank you to our two outstanding guest speakers, Emma Booth Para Equestrian & Kylie Christian - Para Equestrian and well known auctioneer, Simon Vivian for generously giving their time and helping make the evening so memorable.

To everyone who donated items, contributed financially, purchased tickets, bid on auction items, or simply came along to support the event — thank you. The generosity shown by our local community was truly humbling.

We are also incredibly proud of the amazing team at Avenel Equine Hospital. The teamwork, enthusiasm, and dedication shown behind the scenes was nothing short of extraordinary, with everyone rallying together to ensure the event was a roaring success.

And finally, a very special thank you to our Head Surgery Nurse, Kathy Seach. Kathy was the driving force behind this fundraiser, coming up with the original idea and working tirelessly every step of the way to bring it to life. Her passion, commitment, and determination made this event possible.
