💗 Community Appreciation Post 💗

We just wanted to take a moment to express how truly grateful we are to be part of the Aspendale Gardens community.

The other day, one of our furry locals, Mario the dog, got a little too excited about life and decided to go on a solo adventure down busy Wells Road — right at peak hour! 🐶💨
When his poor dad tried to catch him, Mario thought it was the best game of tag ever... weaving through traffic with zero regard for the chaos behind him.

But what happened next reminded us just how incredible this community is.

🚗 People stopped their cars.
⭐️ Strangers jumped in to help.
⏰ Some were late to work — but they didn’t hesitate to put Mario’s safety first.

Together, with the help of a kind passerby, our very own Dr Laura was able to scoop Mario up in a heroic bear hug and get him off the road.

We were honestly blown away by the kindness, selflessness, and quick thinking of everyone involved. It was a heart-stopping moment that turned into a heartwarming one — all thanks to you.

From all of us at AGVH,

Thank you, Aspendale Gardens.
You’re the reason we love what we do, and why we’re so proud to be part of this community.

Rat & Snail Bait Don’t Mix with Pets 🐱 🐶

We know keeping your garden pest-free is important — but if you have pets, it’s crucial to be aware of the dangers that common rat and snail baits pose. 🐀 🐌

These products are highly toxic to cats and dogs — even in small amounts. And unfortunately, they don’t smell or taste bad to your pet... in fact, many are flavoured to attract animals. 😔

Here’s what you need to know:

Rat Bait (Rodenticides): 🐀
Ingesting rat bait can cause internal bleeding, organ failure, or neurological symptoms, depending on the type of toxin used. Signs might not show for days, making early treatment difficult.

Snail & Slug Pellets: 🐌
Many contain a chemical which affects the nervous system and can lead to tremors, seizures, or death in a matter of hours if not treated urgently.

‼️Signs of Poisoning to Watch For: ‼️
If your pet has ingested bait, you might notice:

🔹Vomiting or diarrhoea
🔹Lethargy or collapse
🔹Shaking, tremors, or seizures
🔹Bleeding (from gums, in urine or stool)
🔹Loss of coordination
🔹Difficulty breathing
🔹Pale gums

Keep Your Pets Safe:
✅ Avoid using these products in areas your pets can access.
✅ Be aware that even baits labeled “pet-safe” can cause toxicity and death.
✅Pets can become seriously ill from eating rats or mice that have ingested poison as well.
✅ Store all pesticides securely — even one pellet can be fatal.
✅ If you suspect your pet has eaten bait, call us immediately — don’t wait for symptoms.

Our pets rely on us to keep their world safe. Please share this with fellow pet lovers so we can prevent unnecessary heartbreak.

Found a Baby Bird, Possum, or other wildlife? 🦉

Springtime in Australia means more wildlife encounters — especially with baby animals. While it’s natural to want to help, sometimes our best intentions can do more harm than good. Here’s what to do if you find native wildlife in need:

Baby Birds 🐥
🔹 Many young birds learning to fly spend time on the ground (sometimes up to 5 days) while still being cared for by their parents. Unless they’re injured or in immediate danger (e.g. from pets or traffic), it’s best to leave them where they are.
🔹 If they are in danger, gently move them to a nearby shrub or low branch — within earshot of their parents.

Baby Possums 🐾
🔹 If you find a baby possum alone, especially during the day, it may have fallen from its mother’s back or pouch. Wrap it gently in a towel, place it in a secure box, and keep it warm and quiet. Come night time, it's mother will be looking for them, so placing them in the closest tree to where it was found will give the mother and baby possum the best chance of reuniting.
🔹 Never feed wildlife — incorrect feeding can be fatal.

Injured or Orphaned Wildlife 🦆🩹❤️‍🩹
🔹 If the animal is injured or clearly orphaned, please call Wildlife Victoria and bring it to your nearest vet clinic. We are always happy to help and work with wildlife rescue groups.

🤒What is FIV?🐱

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a virus that weakens a cat’s immune system over time, making them more vulnerable to other infections. It is a virus that once a cat is infected, there is no cure, only treatment.

🦠 How is FIV spread?
FIV is most commonly spread through deep bite wounds, often from fighting. This is why unneutered outdoor male cats are at a higher risk.

🦠 Prevention, Testing, & Vaccines.
- Neutering and keeping cats indoors can greatly reduce risk of infection.
- Having regular vet check ups and testing are important, especially for new or outdoor cats.
- Our clinic provides FIV annual vaccines for our feline friends who may be more at risk of contracting the virus.

🐱 Can FIV positive cats live normal lives?
- Absolutely! With proper care, many FIV positive cats live long, happy, and healthy lives. They should be kept indoors to reduce stress and prevent the spread to other cats.

If your cat goes outside regularly unsupervised, we highly recommend booking in to have your cat tested with us.

To speak to our nurses, or to book in an appointment, please call 9587 4599

Help us keep your cats safe and healthy.

⚡️This is Bolt.🔩

Bolt decided to live up to his name and eat an actual bolt!
Unfortunately, we cannot leave bolts inside tummies in case it does damage or forms a blockage.
Thankfully, we were able to remove Bolt's bolt through induced vomiting.
In the end, Bolt still seemed quite proud of himself.
We do believe he had all good intentions, but we strongly recommend Bolt sticks to the edible nuts and not the metal kind. 🥜

🩸 🧛 Why do we need blood tests? 🧛 🩸

Animals can be Oscar worthy actors when it comes to their health.

A blood test is a great way for our vets to ensure your pet’s look as healthy on the inside as they do on the outside.

We offer a preanesthetic blood test before all our procedures as a way of screening for any underlying diseases that may affect the procedure. This test also allows for our vets to determine how well your animal can tolerate the anesthetic and medications we use.

Our vets recommend annual blood tests for your senior pets to help monitor their health at a biological level rather than purely physical. Animals are fantastic at masking their symptoms and a blood test allows for the vets to see beyond their behaviour alone. Regular testing can help our team catch disease earlier and start intervention before it is too late.

If you are interested, or have any questions about our senior or preanesthetic test, please get in contact with us.

🦷 It's Dental Month! 🦷

Did you know that over 75% of pets experience dental disease in their lifetime?

But what is "Dental Disease"?

Dental disease refers to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and destruction of bone and tissues surrounding teeth (periodontitis). It develops due to poor oral hygiene and can be extremely painful (even if your dog or cat continue to eat). Fortunately, there are many ways to prevent dental disease from developing:

🪥 Chewing on kibble, dental treats, and toys will help keep their teeth clean.
🪥 Daily brushing of the teeth! This is the most effective way to prevent dental disease. But remember never to use human toothpaste for your pets as the fluoride levels are toxic!
🪥 You don't just have to brush your pet's teeth with a brush; you can also use dental wipes or a finger cloth.
🪥 Other effective methods include dental diets, dental chews, and water additives.

If you're dog or cat's breath is smelling a little stinky lately, or they haven't had a teeth clean in a good while, August is the month to ensure their teeth are at their best! We encourage you to book in an appointment with our awesome vets for a dental check. We also offer free nurse dental checks where we can check the health of their teeth and gums and determine if a vet check is suitable for you. During these checks we can also provide tips on how to start brushing your pet's teeth :)

If you have any questions or are looking for advice, please give us a call on 9587 4599.

🎉 Happy Birthday Jennie! 🎉

It was our amazing receptionist Jennie’s birthday yesterday and we enjoyed making her day special. She was recovering from a recent illness, yet was still her super friendly self helping all our clients. As an avid book lover, we just couldn’t resist a special book themed birthday cake. Happy birthday Jennie! You are a superstar and such a special part of our team. It was so lovely to have so many in our wonderful community wishing her a happy birthday too.
