At WagyuEdge’26, Cooper Carter shared research that could revolutionise how the beef industry predicts retail meat yield. Using advanced imaging technologies and artificial intelligence, researchers are working towards much more accurate predictions of carcase performance than traditional grading systems can provide.

The goal?

The Wagyu Content Check (WCC) has returned and is now available to AWA members.

Formerly known as the Crossbred Wagyu Test (CWT), the WCC provides a genomic estimate of Japanese Black Wagyu content, giving members greater confidence when making breeding, registration, feeding, marketing and genetic management decisions.

The service is now fully integrated into the AWA genetic evaluation pipeline, making it easier and more efficient to generate Wagyu content estimates for animals with a recorded SNP genotype profile.

That was the key message from reproduction specialist Dr Ced Wise Wise Repro at WagyuEdge’26.

While Wagyu are renowned for their fertility, Dr Wise reminded producers that factors such as heat stress, nutrition, transport, illness and management can all impact reproductive performance.

His presentation explored what drives bull fertility, how it can be measured, and why protecting this important breed characteristic is critical to the future success of Wagyu herds.
