Allowed to Grow Old

Allowed to Grow Old We're here to change things for the better, for all animals. From those exhausted by factory farming, to those endangered by loss of habitat.

Because every animal should be...

Established in 2023, Allowed to Grow Old (ATGO) is a registered charitable foundation that supports selected animal welfare activities across Australia. ๐Ÿพ And of course, those who have unfairly lost their places as beloved pets. We're here to educate humans about the lifetime commitment animals require. To rescue and rehome animals who are in critical need of care, and to support other organisations whoa re working towards the same goals as us.

A huge THANK YOU to Allowed to Grow Old for sponsoring another 10 parvo vaccinations last month through our Warm Paws Parvo Vaccination Program. ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿพ

Their ongoing support helps protect vulnerable poundies from deadly parvo while they wait for rescue, adoption or their owners to come for them. Vaccination also gives rescue confidence to save ๐Ÿ™

Scout was just 6 years old and had been surrendered to the pound. He was struggling to cope in the pound environment and deteriorated very quickly, and with no quick rescue or adoption, Scout was sadly euthanised ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ญ

Scoutโ€™s story is a reminder that time really matters for poundies. Protection from parvo is one part of keeping them safe, but getting them out of the pound is just as critical.

Eight of the 10 vaccinated were puppies who had been dumped at the pound, and three have already been adopted directly from the pound.

He is a 1yr old Kelpie X Rotti and a very nervous boy who needs patience while he builds his confidence. ๐Ÿ’š

Thank you, AtGO, for continuing to sponsor 10 vaccinations every single month. Your support is helping give these vulnerable dogs a better chance while they wait for their next chapter.

๐Ÿ’š Would you like to help us vaccinate more poundies?

AtGOโ€™s monthly sponsorship covers 10 vaccinations, but there are many more dogs coming through rural pounds who need protection. Every donation, big or small, helps us vaccinate another dog and gives them one less risk to face while they wait for a safe outcome. ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿพ

Today we celebrate Spikeโ€™s 34th Birthday! ๐Ÿฅณ

Spike joined our herd back when he was only 2 years old. He was severely underweight.

The Spike we know now is soft, gentle & nurturing.

It is our greatest honour to care for Spike during his elderly years & to give him the freedom he deserves.

Because all animals should beโ€ฆ

The last of Romeoโ€™s posts (for now) from our partners sumatransunbearteam ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’›

Romeo has thrived! He has put on some weight and building muscle with all of his activities.

You can barely see his facial scars, with his hair re-growing over his head. He has enjoyed getting a dirty face from rubbing in the grass in the outdoor area, breaking open logs, climbing and foraging for food. He also looooooves standing in his water tub, resting while cooling himself with a full tummy!

Everyone who gets to meet Romeo, tru to his name, falls in love with him.

We really want to thank the Ministry of forestry and environment for allowing us to care for Romeo. And to SRA for working with us to care for Sumatran Sun Bears ๐Ÿ˜Š

We also sincerely want to thank all our donors for regular support and also to Allowed to Grow Old for their commitment to our long-term partnership and support. Without you, we could never have built the space to care for Romeo and his old friend Cantik and his new Buddies ๐Ÿ’›

More of Romeoโ€™s story from our partners sumatransunbearteam ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’›

In 2020 we formed a partnership with OIC, who had started Sumatran Rescue Alliance; SRA. Then, In situations that were beyond our control, Romeo had to wait longer for us to rescue him and give him the space that he deserved. Along came Covid, and even though we couldnโ€™t travel to Sumatra for a while, we committed to building a space for displaced Sun Bears. Romeo waited for us.

Once our first building was complete, but a very young, dependent cub named Jessy, who needed around-the-clock care required to jump the queue. Unexpectedly 2 other bears, Uca and Rossa were transferred to our centre shortly after.

Cantik and Romeo had to wait. We built our 2nd building as fast as we financially could. Romeo was finally able to come to our site in June 2024! He had struggled being in a cage for all this time and he had been banging his head on the bars. A cry for help? We were finally happy to allow his cry to be heard and welcome him into our SSBT home.

Romeoโ€™s story from our partners Sumatran Sun Bear Team ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’›

Romeoโ€™s story is a long one, there will be a few posts with his entire story.

Romeo, a beautiful, transformed Sun Bear.

SSBT first heard about Romeo in 2018. He was just a cub in a Government facilty. We think that he had been confiscated as an illegal pet. It is against the law to keep Sun Bears as pets as they are a protected species. He was housed next to an adult amputee; Cantik. Romeo was given his name due to the almost heart-shaped crest on his chest.

We worked hard to secure partnerships in Sumatra. We worked hard to raise the funds to build our first enclosure with 3 large dens.

SSBT made a promise to Romeo and Cantik that we would build them a home where they could behave a lot more like wild bears. We visited them several times, provided enrichment, formed friendships with their carers and continued to promise them a new life.

How cool are these Wood Ducks! ๐Ÿฆ†

They are checking out a hollow made by Coastal Wildlife Management to see if it will be a suitable place for a nest.

Wood Ducks use tree hollows to keep their eggs & ducklings safe!

Follow along to see if they have any ducklings!
