Last night I stopped to move a deceased kangaroo off the road and found a joey alive in the pouch.

I’m sharing this in hopes to inform others to know what to do in a similar situation.

I used Wildlife Victoria’s online reporting tool, and they quickly called back and arranged for someone local in Ararat to collect the joey. Today it will be transferred to a carer in Beaufort to be raised alongside other orphans until it’s ready for release.

Snakes are a vital part of our ecosystems and incredibly cool animals. Today on World Snake Day I want to take a moment to acknowledge that my life would definitely not be the same without these wonderful and misunderstood animals. I've been blessed to have had so many opportunities to work with, relocate and care for so many amazing snake species over my career as a wildlife demonstrator, zookeeper and snake catcher.

These animals are important parts of the ecosystem, and belong here just as much as our other beautiful native wildlife.

Today, I had the amazing opportunity to visit the Weigel Venom Centre at the Australian Reptile Park. Watching a tiger snake being milked was an unforgettable experience, with Tiger Snakes being the the most common Snake in the Ararat area it was very informative to learn about the anti-venom process from the knowledgeable staff.

This venom program is vital, saving hundreds of lives each year by producing the anti-venom that Australians rely on. Incredible work happening here, and so privileged to be able to see it up close!

🐍 Tiger Snake Callout – Willaura 🏠

This morning, I was called out to a home in Willaura where a Tiger Snake had made its way to the bathroom door inside the house. With the Grampians bushfires raging, wildlife is on the move, seeking safety wherever they can — just like us.

I’m grateful I could safely relocate this snake and bring peace of mind to the family.

💛 My heart goes out to everyone affected by the fires, and I’m incredibly thankful for the tireless efforts of those working on the front lines to protect our community.
