Now that it's July, any couple thinking of getting married either in the spring or summer should be choosing a celebrant ASAP. It's interesting the way the celebrant is often the last item on the list to be organised. In one way I "get it". But keep in mind that at least one calendar month's notice must be allowed for when it comes to the paperwork. For example, I met a couple on 27th June who want to marry as quickly as possible. Legally, the soonest that could happen is 27th July - which is the date they chose to become Mr and Mrs. For others with the luxury of time, that's great. But, if you want a standard wedding where your love story is to be told - an explanation as to why you've chosen to marry - it takes time for me to get the info from the couple and write the script. All of my scripts are different, based on what info I'm given. Unlike some tales I've heard about celebrants who have a "cookie cutter" recipe for them, mine are all written from scratch to match the personalities of the couple and their relationship. If this is what you are seeking, and plan to marry before the end of 2025, or early 2026, you need to start ringing around, especially if you are thinking about October! Does this option to make your ceremony unique appeal to you?? Every time I marry a couple, whether through a legals only or a standard ceremony, there is always one special option I offer to couples. Some choose to take me up on the offer, others not. To personalise your ceremony, brides, grooms or partners can create a statement (a secret wedding or vow statement) which I print and pass on the day. It's always a surprise for your partner and a lovely element for any marriage ceremony. If it's a standard wedding, I prepare a vow card i.e. a cover sheet with the date and reader's name and the printed statement (in large font) inside. I simply pass it over with a microphone - and rarely is there a dry eye to be seen. If it's a legals only ceremony, it's the same, just without the cover sheet. But, it achieves the exact same result! These days, after the ceremony, I leave the vow statements with the memento certificate so that the married couple can reread their vow statements on their first anniversary. I've been told that's a lovely way to revisit that special day.
My couples also tell me they love the opportunity to say how they feel. Though many have been self-conscious about writing their statement, with encouragement, a few samples plus a little polishing at my end, we ensure the final result is heart-warming and genuine. Today I received wonderful news from the mother and mother-in-law of a couple I married 27 May 2023. Mr and Mrs Johnson are now living in Siberia (yes, that's the truth!) and are expecting a baby. I'm soooo happy for them!
The photo from their ceremony at Boulder Beach headland shows a very happy bride, who is a Russian born translator. Would you believe she and her Australian born husband communicate in Chinese? Seriously! Mr Johnson is the son of Donna Sharam, a very well known local artist, who also happens to be a lovely neighbour of mine.
I sincerely wish these young people the very best as they await the new addition to their family!

Sometimes we can be lucky with the weather. At Rock Valley, today, as we waited for the bride to appear with her mother and her two niece bridesmaids, it started to sprinkle. Quickly the signing table was moved out of the rain and everyone moved under cover. The wedding bower and guest shelter was ready and waiting. Fortunately the sprinkling stopped and didn't begin again until after the bride and groom had been pronounced husband and wife. Better still, when the signing was finished, with both fathers as witnesses, the newlyweds were introduced to their nearest and dearest as Mr and Mrs S., while the sun spilled light everywhere. It was spectacular, as was my wedding on Saturday when a rainbow appeared above the marrying couple at Modanville! I look forward to sharing more photos of both weddings, which were so different in style and approach. That's the beauty of my role as a celebrant - every wedding is unique and tailored to the bride and groom's preferences. Being a celebrant is probably the most fun "job" I've ever had. I've had many roles, from being a cashier and a waitress when I was studying education at uni; then a secondary school teacher; a horticulturist and consultant in our family business; and then finally working with the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust for 16 years. I retired in November 2014 and eventually moved, with my husband, to the Northern Rivers where we finally found a 76 acre macadamia farm that we loved. We added a few hundred finger limes which continue to leave their mark on my arms, no matter how good the elbow high gloves. 🥹 Big green views, huge sky, breezy fresh air and a sense of freedom and space are everyday companions. My social life is ever expanding as I make dreams come true for couples who are in love and want to tie the knot.

This is a very helpful list for brides and grooms who've just become engaged. Starting a year ahead is great, if you can. But if you're short on time and want to get married in a few months, as many of my couples do, then it's easily sorted. As long as we can have our first meeting at least one full calendar month before your preferred wedding date, we can manage! I'm very happy to be put to the test, which I admit, I have been many times.

To all the brides-to-be who live, work or dream about living or marrying on a farm, I'm wondering if any of you have come across what I did recently? Obviously we've had a lot of rain ... and our local wildlife like to keep dry and comfortable as well. But, imagine my surprise when I drove down to our machinery shed to start up my rideon mower ... only to find this on the seat! Of course it's a python skin, but initially I gasped and definitely checked around me. Of course the long reptile would have been long gone ... but I had trouble controlling my ... let's call it "concern". Co-existing is fine; but when I sit on my machine these days, I know something big has been before me!

A photo can say it all about a wedding - especially after the couple has been pronounced husband and wife and then, following the signing, introduced as Mr and Mrs. Sarah and Chris felt this way after their recent wedding at one of our local headlands. Let's just say, happiness and relief were probably their primary emotions on that morning - when the sky, less than half an hour earlier, was threatening, super dark and stormy. Of course we did have a backup plan, which is always key to working with Mother Nature.
