⚠️ GRASS SEED WARNING — ADELAIDE DOG OWNERS, PLEASE READ! ⚠️
As we head into the warmer months here in Adelaide, grass seeds are becoming a real concern for our four-legged family members!
These tiny seeds might look harmless, but they can cause serious pain, infection and potentially dangerous complications if they become embedded in your dog's skin or enter their ears, nose or eyes.
WHERE DO GRASS SEEDS HIDE?
Between the toes and paw pads
Inside or around the ears
Around the eyes
In and around the nostrils
Under the armpits, around the belly and groin
Deep in the coat, especially in long-haired and double-coated breeds.
SIGNS YOUR DOG MAY HAVE A GRASS SEED:
Excessive licking or chewing at their paws Limping, swelling or a sore between the toes
Constant head shaking or scratching at the ears
Repeated sneezing or pawing at the nose
Redness, discharge or squinting around the eyes
A persistent lump, wound or abscess.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOUR DOG?
Avoid walking through long, dry grass and areas full of seed heads.
Check your dog's paws, ears, face and entire coat after every walk.
Keep their coat brushed and free of mats where seeds can become trapped.
Keep your yard free of dry weeds and grass seed heads.
Book regular grooming to help identify seeds hiding in the coat.
IMPORTANT: If you suspect a grass seed has entered your dog's ear, nose or eye, or become embedded in their skin, contact your vet promptly. Grass seeds can travel deeper into tissue and cause serious infections. Never dig around for a deeply embedded seed yourself.
PLEASE DON'T IGNORE THE SIGNS. What starts as a little bit of paw licking or head shaking can turn into a painful problem if left untreated.
