𝙸𝚜 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚑𝚘𝚛𝚜𝚎 𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚖𝚙𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚒𝚝 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚒𝚝𝚜 𝚗𝚎𝚡𝚝 𝚍𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚕?🐴

Horses, unlike other pets, have Hypsodont teeth which means their teeth continuously erupt throughout their life. As horses chew, the grinding slowly wears the teeth down to keep them at the right length above the gum. The amount that the teeth wear depends on a horse’s diet and environment and varies between all horses. Floating (rasping the horse’s teeth) the sharp edges to bring the teeth back to a flat surface is the primary goal of routine equine dentistry. Some of the signs that a horse needs a dental are dropping feed while chewing, eating slowly, resistance or head shaking when using a bridle bit and weight loss.
When horses get into their 20’s their teeth are coming to an end and this is often when more issues arise. If there are abnormalities, it is generally recommended to have the teeth floated every 3-6 months. If your horse is now in their senior years and showing symptoms of poor dentition, make sure to book in for a dental on 4779 0233.

Operation Wanted is an RSPCA initiative encouraging the desexing of pets by offering a 20% discount at participating vet clinics during the months of June to August!

To receive 20% off your pet's desexing, first register at https://operationwanted.com.au/ and then provide the registration code to our staff when you are booking the surgery.

The Townsville Vet Clinic will be closed for the Show Day Public Holiday on Monday 7 July 25. However, we do offer an after hours service for our clients.

Just to round off Senior Pet Month, we would like to share a photo of one of our regular senior pets - just don't tell her she's old because she doesn't know it !

Nala's dignified gray muzzle blends nicely into her gold coat - we all hope to age that gracefully ! Her tail wag is that of a much younger pup though. Monthly injections also go a long way to keeping that spring in her step.
