👻 Black Ghost Knifefish

Few freshwater fish move quite like the Black Ghost Knifefish. Using its long, rippling fin, it can glide smoothly forwards, backwards and around obstacles with an almost ghost-like movement.

This nocturnal South American species produces a very weak electrical field to help navigate and locate food—it cannot shock people or its tank mates.

Quick Facts

🐟 Adult size: Up to approximately 50 cm
🌡️ Temperature: 23–28°C
💧 pH: 6.0–8.0
🏠 Aquarium: Around 400 litres or larger for an adult
🌙 Behaviour: Nocturnal and generally peaceful
🍽️ Diet: Carnivorous—quality sinking foods plus frozen or live meaty foods
🐠 Tank mates: Larger peaceful fish that cannot fit in its mouth

Provide dim areas, excellent water quality and plenty of caves, driftwood or smooth tubes where it can shelter during the day. Avoid keeping it with very small fish or additional Black Ghost Knifefish unless the aquarium is exceptionally large.

Cooler weather can cause aquarium temperatures to drop, especially overnight. Sudden temperature changes can place unnecessary stress on tropical fish, so now is a good time to check your setup.
