3 week transformation 😍❤️
For most horses 3 weeks in their lives are no different to any other week, but for an off the track race horse who is trying to transition to hopefully become a ridden horse for pleasure, showing, eventing or any discipline off the track, it can be 3 weeks that are paramount to how they adapt to the change, not only mentally but physically, and Thoroughbreds who are already ridden do not necessarily have the upper hand of their co-partner 'Off the track Standardbreds'. For both breeds it’s an extreme diet change, from “high octane” type fuel necessary for their performance and recovery to a diet suited to more a relaxed and low key life style. Very often some horses bodies can “crash” on the digestive changes and this is why it’s important to treat and manage all horses individually. Also believe it or not muscles are now needing to be used they had not had to rely on before which can seem odd given these animals are prime athletes busting at speeds or requiring stamina to last the distance.
Many horses tend to have a higher head carriage allowing their front legs to move faster and higher off the ground to allow their hinds to land and power off again.
We ask a lot from them and hope that can adapt from what they knew as their everyday normal.
Here you can see Ralph, formerly known as 'Rubamos', 3 weeks apart from his first ride and his ride today, his neck and shoulders have noticeably increased in size and strength, and he is happily working through the bridle while cantering.
His mask is a fly veil only on due to how extreme the flys were.
