In Oct 2024, I went for a random mammogram check!
After hearing Ali Clarke's story (mix102.3 radio host) every single day on the radio of her having a double masectomy at 47, so I thought I am about to turn 45 i better have my first scan.
Well glad I did!!
I got a call early November 2024 and needed to go into the breast clinic to hear my results.
I was diagnosed with DCIS
(Ductal carcinoma in situ)
pre-cancerous or non-invasive cancer that is trapped in the milk duct.
Mine was graded High at a stage 3.
On the 11th of December 2024, I had a lumpectomy and a D-flip reconstruction, I took a month off work to recover.
I did come back to work for a bit after Christmas before a few weeks.
I have since been told that there is still a microscopic speck left behind that can't be surgically removed but I had a choice of a masectomy or radiation, let me tell you.....that was THE hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life.
It took me a month to finally decide and be comfortable with my decision.
I chose Radiation!! Still a very scary decision.
I have to have 15 rounds everyday (except weekends) I just did my 4th one today.
I started my first radiation session Thursday last week (my 15th wedding anniversary!!)
It was a very emotional day, I cryed during the treatment, I was so scared and I had sooooo many emotions and feelings all happening at once.
I had my second session Friday, I was alot stronger, definitely not as scared, I've got this now.
I will be off work while in treatment, and will miss all my doggie walks and cuddles very much.
I think I just need to focus on my treatment, having time to recover after my treatments and being in the moment with Matty and our girls (and rest my extensive tendon tear in my foot)
So here we go!!
πWhen checking for breast cancer Please choose a mammogram or MRI as DCIS breast cancer (what i was diagnosed with) is VERY COMMON and DOSN'T come with any LUMPS or DISCOLORATION it is UNDETECTED with a manual check.πYou Never think it will happen to you till it does!!
