I still can't believe how silly I was forgetting to get photos of the team at the National, but regardless of that, I was so very pleased with them all, particularly the babies, being at their first show - what a baptism of fire it was, with 6 rings over 2 days.

With a total number of entries reaching 412, there were a whopping 255 Group 3 cats in total, comprising 106 kittens, 97 entires, and 52 desexed. Of those, Devons were well represented, with 21 kittens, 7 entires and 3 desexed, so competition was strong, and I'm delighted to say that the Rabeskah name did me proud!

The only adult I took was Cy, (GCh Apokalypt Scion of Cybermax, Imp NZ). I barely got a look at him either day, but was told he was his usual lovely confident self. I didn't know how the challenges work at Nationals, but it turns out that as the three adult males were all in the same colour class of "non-agouti and white", they shared the honours and Cy received 2 challenges.

Now, to the babies. Like a fool, I took 4 kittens entered in my name, (Cameo, Rusty, Minnie and Shadow) and another (Little Ash), entered in Kimberley's name, but she will now be taking Rusty instead. It only occurred to me after meeting Pamela Pinkerton on Saturday, that 4 of the 5 kittens were either grandkits or great grandkits of her adopted Ruby. Di Hobson might like to know though, that all 5 of these babies are grandkits of Rocky. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Cameo Kisses got 2 best of breeds, and a 4th of breed, plus 7th and 12th in Group
Rusty Kisses got a best and reserve of breed, plus 12th and 15th in Group
Ms Mouseling (Minnie) got reserve, 3rd and 5th of breed, and 14th best in group
Shadow Quest, bless her, looked gorgeous and received lots of encouraging comments and lovely cuddles from judges, but was simply too shy to show herself off, so not wanting to stress her too much, I left her home Sunday
Little Ash, got a best and reserve of breed, plus 6th in Group

In the desexed group, Kimberley Herewane's adult boy, JackJack, had a great show too, but I'll let her share his results here when she's ready ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ†

I am so pleased with how well all the cats did, and was delighted to catch up with so many. Safe travels to all those heading home today/this week.
Although very grateful for a lovely quiet day today, I should probably finally get dressed and unpack the rest of the things from the car ๐Ÿคฃ

Well, what a busy weekend at the 2026 National Australian Cat Show - hosted by Gccfsa As weary as I am, I'm so glad to be a local and not have a long trip home, but it was wonderful that so many travelled from across the country, and a few even travelled from NZ (without cats) to enjoy the experience.
I'm so tired, I'll post details and results tomorrow, but unbelievably, I forgot to get any photos! I'll blame this silly sinus carry on ๐Ÿ™„
I will say though, that my babies made me very proud, in breed and group, especially for their very first show!

Despite some ongoing sinusitis, today was a lovely first day at the 2026 National Australian Cat Show - hosted by Gccfsa. It's always such a pleasure to meet up with people you might only know through Facebook or see at such events. I was also delighted to meet Ruby's adoptive "mum" Pamela Pinkerton and her husband (since they live several hours away, their daughter collected Ruby for them).

Results have to wait until after judging finishes tomorrow, but with 412 cats total entered, with 106 of them being Group 3 kittens, including 20 Devon Rex kittens, competition was strong and there were some stunning cats.

I'm looking forward to day 2 tomorrow, but meanwhile, I think an early night is in order. If you're in Adelaide, maybe come past and say Hi! The public are welcome 10am - 3pm at the John McVeity Centre, Peachey Rd, Smithfield Plains

!!! WHAT A CAT BREEDER NEVER SAYS OUT LOUD! ๐Ÿฑ

๐Ÿค” Many people think that a cat breeder lives in a perfect world with their cats. But hardly anyone sees what is really behind to accompany these little miracles into life healthy and lovingly. The pictures are sweet. Reality is intense, demanding and full of responsibility.

โ˜ Every birth is a lottery.

You can prepare, plan and learn anything... but no birth goes like the other.

Feels like the first time every time, even after many years of experience.

๐Ÿ˜” Death is our greatest enemy.

A cat that gets complications. A kitten that just can't make it.

It often happens unexpectedly and breaks our hearts every time.

๐Ÿ‘ Recruiting a suitable cat costs money, time and effort.

Health tests, travel costs, cover charges, waiting times and many sleepless nights.

And then we hope that everything goes well: infections, birth problems or developmental disorders can occur at any time.

Breeding is an investment - financially, emotionally and physically.

๐Ÿผ Bottle feeding?

Cute... for the first five minutes.

After that, it often means weeks-long feeding every two to three hours โ€“ day and night.

This is no longer a hobby, this is survival mode.

๐Ÿคฆ Many people see kittens as "business":

"Number of kittens ร— price = win! โ€œ

What is often forgotten:

โ€ข Health and genetic testing

โ€ข Club and breeding costs

โ€ข High-quality nutrition

โ€ข Veterinary costs

โ€ข Vaccines, chip and pedigree

โ€ข Taxation

โ€ข Care and hygiene

โ€ข Photos, website and advertisements

โ€ข Mountains of cat litter and food

โ€ข Countless cups of coffee and nerve food

โ€ข And above all: sleepless nights

What's left at the end?

Rarely a gold bar.

Often not even a reasonable hourly wage.

๐Ÿ˜ด Sleepless nights are inevitable.

No weekends, no vacations, no breaks.

๐Ÿคซ Who really raises the kittens?

The mother cat ... and the breeder.

Any little infection that could endanger a whole litter is feared. Many people want to come in for meet and greets. Some breeders allow this, some donโ€™t. There is a huge risk with letting outsiders into our sterile cattery. An invisible bacteria or fungus on the bottom of a shoe, or under a finger nail can be catastrophic to a cattery. Because when one get sick or infected, you have to treat them all. Add on thousands in vet bills, disposal of all cat trees/toys, having to purchase new ones and endless hours disinfecting. On top of that breeders have been targeted. Our homes are filled with thousands of dollars in cats. There have been horrific situations where breeders have been robbed and even murdered. We understand youโ€™re worried about your couple hundred dollar deposit. Just know how much we risk every time someone enters our home.

Scammers: They plague us all. Breeders get scammed to, usually for much more because we pay a premium for breeding rights. They also steal our photos, use our names and good reputations to scam people. Never send money without doing a live video call. Every breeder will do this. Breeders also donโ€™t harass or push you to buy their kittens. Look at backgrounds of photos. Are they taken in the same room? Do your due diligence.

Back yard breeders - The bane of every ethical breeders existence. Ethical breeders test every single cat before breeding, we get echocardiograms, hip scansโ€ฆ all prior to breeding. We do not breed animals that carry any genetic mutations. Our goal is to better the breed and eliminate these things. Backyard breeders donโ€™t test, lie about testing and pump out kittens back to back litters, often caging their cats, living in squaller, not socializing and often plagued with illness. A โ€œgood dealโ€ is often a VERY bad deal that will cost you so much more in vet bills and often lead to heartache when your 3 yr old cat drops dead from hcm. Stop supporting backyard breeders to save a little money.

๐Ÿ˜ฌ And the question:

"Why is the kitten so expensive?" โ€œ

If we got a dollar for every time...

Then maybe our cats would get caviar instead of high-quality food.

The bottom line is that they are extremely expensive to breed. Good well established catteries with A+ programs charge A LOT for breeding rights. They can very easily be upwards of $10,000 for a quality cat. Add on all of the testing, scans, vet bills, high quality food, toys, litter, etc. Imagine investing all that time and money and having your cat fail their hip scan or echo at a year old, or as they develop they no longer meet breed standards. It happens every day. We have so much on the line with every cat we add to our programs. Sometimes they just donโ€™t get along with your other cats. There are so many things that can railroad our plans and cost us thousands.

๐Ÿ˜ต ๐Ÿ’ซ The future owners are also worrying us.

A kitten is not a commodity you just order.

It's a little creature with needs and character.

Often the color of the fur seems to be more important than the creature.

Many want a kitten IMMEDIATELY and are at the same time on waiting lists with several breeders to get their desired cat or cat as soon as possible.

Many go unprepared into the adventures of cat farming.

You expect the kitten to immediately understand everything, behave perfectly and do no work.

This is why we choose our families carefully.

Sometimes we choose against interested people.

Sometimes we wait longer.

Because they are our "babies" and we only want the best for them.

๐Ÿ˜” Emotional fatigue?

You rarely see these.

The pressure, the responsibility, the constant worry and the feeling that you always have to do everything right.

And sometimes the loneliness in difficult situations.

๐Ÿ’” Sometimes we just want to stop.

After a loss.

After a setback.

After being exhausted.

And then a kitten opens its eyes for the first time...

and it all starts again.

It's a passion that keeps you going.

๐Ÿ™ We rarely talk about the grief.

Yet with every loss, a piece of our heart is lost.

Itโ€™s terrible when a kitten canโ€™t make it.

Nevertheless, we stand up again - for the other kittens who need our care and should later find a loving home.

๐Ÿฅฐ Yes, there are beautiful moments.

Yes the joy is huge.

But behind every responsible cat breeder, there's a path of sleepless nights, worries, tears, and emotions.

And above all:

Unconditional love for these special animals. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ

That's what we do it for.

Hi humans. It's me, a cat. I have some important business to discuss.

First of all, cats are awesome because:

๐Ÿ˜บ We can turn an ordinary house into a home.
๐Ÿ˜บ We provide free entertainment at 3am.
๐Ÿ˜บ We are professional biscuit makers.
๐Ÿ˜บ We listen without judging (mostly).
๐Ÿ˜บ We can lower stress and make people smile just by existing.
๐Ÿ˜บ We come in every shape, size, colour, breed, and personality imaginable.

But being awesome isn't enough. We need your help.

๐Ÿ“ข Sharing cat information saves lives.

When you share posts about:
๐Ÿพ Desexing
๐Ÿพ Microchipping
๐Ÿพ Responsible ownership
๐Ÿพ Health and welfare
๐Ÿพ Breed education
๐Ÿพ Safe housing and enrichment
..you help cats everywhere.

A single share might help someone find a lost cat, learn why desexing matters, understand a breed's needs, or become a more responsible owner.

Every time you share good information, you're helping create a world where more cats are loved, protected, and understood.

So from all of us cats:

๐Ÿ’– Share the facts. Share the education. Share the love.

Because every cat matters, and informed humans make the best cat servants.
