RSL Care SA has a new employee on a permanent part time basis, Curtis STEIGER, employed as a Veteran Support Officer. This is exciting news and Curtis and his position will help to make Veteran lives more fulfilling. I spoke with Curtis and Ricky the other day and Curtis presents as energetic and committed. I suggest if Curtis asks for your help it is in our Veterans best interests to oblige him and he in turn can help other ESOβs.
The Veteran Support Officer is part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for the identification of, and to enable the provision of basic hierarchical needs support specific to older homeless veterans, or those at-risk of being homeless. Provision for this is via RSL Care SAβs aged care facilities and their Andrew Russell Veteran Living (ARVL) program. The position, in conjunction with key stakeholders, will enable the securing of appropriate accommodation for the veteran, to be and feel connected, to be heard, valued and fulfilled, in accordance with RSL Care SAβs philosophy, policies and procedures.
The RSL Care SA philosophy is one based on a holistic approach to the best possible quality of life for individual residents/clients underpinned by evidence-based clinical care and dignity, choice, and respect for residents/clients. The position is about ensuring each resident/client is able to experience the best quality of life possible, in an environment which meets their psychosocial needs.
The Veteran Support Officer is a role model for all staff and through their leadership they are responsible and accountable for the satisfaction of residents/clients and their families with the services provided through this aspect of the Veteransβ Support program. The position will contribute to the sustainment of the Janus Approach, corporate continuous improvement activities and, where relevant, identify and lead specific continuous improvement initiatives.
The Veteran Support Officer works closely with the AN-ACC & Admissions Manager and the ARVL Program Manager, to assist and support clients into residential aged care or other appropriate, and ideally, long-term accommodation. The Veteran Support Officer is responsible for conducting information gathering activities of both new and ongoing veteran residents/clients. It is a senior and outward-facing position within the RSL Care SA organisation, with a strong requirement for engaging external organisations in educational and collaborative solution considerations within the veteran and aged care communities.
Key to this position is the formation of good working relationships to ensure quality of service and outcomes, regularly involving liaison with external health care professionals, social workers, and ex-Service organisations. The position is expected to work with minimal direct supervision but in accordance with a mutually agreed work program.
