🐾 Winter is Here – Keeping Your Pets Safe and Comfortable in the Cold 🐾

As the temperatures drop, our furry family members can feel the effects of the colder weather too. While many pets love a brisk walk or a cosy nap by the heater, winter can bring some hidden health risks.

❄️ How You Can Help Your Pet This Winter
• Provide a warm, dry, draught-free sleeping area.
• Ensure outdoor pets have adequate shelter from wind and rain.
• Keep bedding clean and dry.
• Consider a coat or jumper for short-haired, elderly, or small breed dogs.
• Maintain regular exercise, but avoid the coldest parts of the day.
• Ensure fresh water is always available, as pets can still become dehydrated in winter.
• Continue feeding a balanced diet to help maintain a healthy body condition.

⚠️ What to Look Out For
Cold weather can worsen existing health conditions and cause new problems, including:
• Stiffness or difficulty getting up (arthritis flare-ups)
• Increased sleeping or reduced activity levels
• Shivering or seeking warmth constantly
• Weight loss or reduced appetite
• Persistent coughing or breathing difficulties
• Pale gums, weakness, or lethargy
• Changes in drinking, urination, or toileting habits

🐶🐱 Senior pets, very young pets, and those with underlying health conditions are particularly vulnerable during the colder months.

A little extra care during winter can make a big difference to your pet's comfort and wellbeing.

❤️ Because we don't settle for "good enough" when it comes to your pet's health.

❄️ Did You Know? ❄️

As the weather gets colder, our pets tend to burn more energy just to stay warm—especially smaller, older, or short-coated animals. This means they may need a little extra food (and a lot of extra snuggles 🐾).

Keep an eye on their comfort, make sure they have warm bedding, and don’t forget—cold ground can be tough on little paws too!

Stay warm,
North East Vet 🐶🐱

Meet Barney 🐾

Barney came in yesterday for a dental procedure, and as you can see, his teeth were heavily covered in plaque and tartar. This kind of buildup isn’t just cosmetic — it can lead to some pretty serious health issues, including:
• Painful gum disease (periodontal disease)
• Infection and tooth root abscesses
• Tooth loss
• Bad breath
• Bacteria entering the bloodstream and affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys

Barney needed quite a few teeth removed, but we were able to thoroughly clean the rest — removing all plaque and tartar, followed by a scale and polish ✨

He went home feeling much more comfortable and with fresh breath, ready for all the kisses again 💕

Dental health is so important for our pets — if you’re noticing bad breath or visible tartar, it might be time to book a dental check 🦷

Today we celebrate World Veterinary Day 🐾💙

A huge shoutout to the incredible vets who dedicate their lives to caring for our pets—often behind the scenes, in long hours, and in emotionally challenging situations.

From routine check-ups and life-saving surgeries to comforting worried owners and advocating for those who can’t speak for themselves, vets do it all with compassion, skill, and heart.

Thank you for the early mornings, late nights, and everything in between. Your work doesn’t go unnoticed, and our community is better because of you.

Please join us in showing some love and appreciation for our amazing veterinary team today 💙🐶🐱
