I spied the first ranunculus and anemone buds while doing caterpillar patrol this morning. Spring is on its way!! The plants are all looking so healthy and lush which makes me so happy as last year’s ranunculus ended up being such a small crop thanks to rotting corms, blackbirds and caterpillars. I’m really looking forward to being able to pick buckets and buckets of ranunculus again this year, along with my first Italian anemones 🌸

Taking advantage of the rain to hide in the shed and start seeds today. I always end up with a gap between ranunculus and dahlias of having any big showy flowers, so am determined to fix that this year. It’s not cold enough for peonies, so the plan is for lots more snapdragons blooming continually, rudbeckia (they did really well leading up to Christmas two years ago), celosia and amaranth. The last two I don’t usually start until spring as they’re summer flowers, but being so warm I have self sown ones popping up everywhere so figure it’s worth a try for late spring/early summer blooms. I’ll also be starting sunflowers in a month or so.
I would love to know, if you’re also in a warmer climate with no frost, how do you bridge the gap between ranunculus and dahlias?

Planting out our fourth round of ranunculus today. The baby plants get covered with shade cloth until they’re well and truly established as last year half our seedlings got decimated by birds continually digging them up. It’s been working well so far, plantings one to three are all growing so well and the birds haven’t been near them. One final round is presprouting in the shed and then in a few short months we should be picking buckets of beautiful blooms again 🌸

Mulching and cover cropping the main dahlia patch today, it helps to check how much seed you have, I ran out a quarter of the way through 🤦‍♀️ I haven’t lifted any dahlias this year, instead am just over planting all of them with spring flowers and cover crops. I usually lose a few by leaving them in the ground but I also always lose some to storage as well. The ones that do survive overwintering always bloom earlier the next season and that’s always a good thing 🌸

The flower patch is looking a bit different in winter. Most of the summer flowers cut down, except for some celosia that’s still blooming! And lots of spring seedlings tucked into the ground 🌱 In just a few months these beds will be filled with colourful blooms once more.
