You know those photos and videos people post of their dogs looking “guilty” after being scolded for doing something they shouldn’t have? It’s unlikely those dogs are feeling guilty but rather feeling fearful or unsure of what the situation means for them.
Rafferty knows what to expect from me in every situation.
This is a photo I snapped of my beautiful boy Rafferty after I caught him tearing a bin bag open and rummaging through its contents.
My reaction to the situation was to ask, “What’re you doing, Raff?” He responded by happily bouncing over to me to show me his treasure.
Should he be tearing up garbage bags? No. However, I left the gate open and I left the bag of garbage in the kitchen. This is on me.
Look how happy he is! He showed no fear or uncertainty about the situation. This is what I want for my dogs. I want them to be confident that I will never intentionally cause them emotional, mental, or physical harm. I am their safety. Life is full of illness, threats, risks, and disappointments. I want to be their refuge and comfort. I am their advocate.
