With the current heatwave well under way, I just wanted to remind you of the importance of hydration. Always ensure that your pets have easy access to fresh, clean and cool water. For the home, invest in some good quality ceramic bowls as this will help keep the water cool and hygienic. Plastic bowls can easily get scratches in the surface and this can harbour bacteria which will flourish in the warmer weather.
And don't forget to leave water bowls in your garden to help the wildlife to cope with the heat. Leave shallow dishes of water in the shade at ground level for little critters, but please only in areas that are safe from predators such as the family dog and/or cat. Shallow dishes high up or in trees can also provide safety from predators. Maybe even consider placing twigs and rocks in deep dishes to help little critters climb out if they accidentally fall in.
Long term considerations can include planting native trees as this will not only provide food and shelter but also create a cooling effect in your garden for future warm weather seasons.
If you encounter a heat-stressed animal in your garden, provide a shallow dish of water to give them an opportunity to lap at the water and then call your local vet or wildlife carer.
