📣RUGS📣
With the onset of warmer weather, it is essential to ensure your horses are appropriately rugged.

During the day, a cotton rug is generally suitable for most horses at this time of year. For those that sweat easily and require protection from insects a great alternative, is a mesh rug or a hybrid mesh-cotton rug may also be considered.

At night, if you choose to apply a rainsheet or heavy rug, please ensure it can be removed in the morning. Horses can lose significant condition if left heavily rugged during warm to hot weather. This can also lead to dehydration from excessive sweating.

It is worth noting that most horses do not begin to feel the effects of cold temperatures until approximately 5°C. However, it is essential to remember that each horse is unique, much like individuals, and may have distinct requirements.

My favourite saying is "you never stop learning". Over the weekend, we were blessed with some incredible weather and took the opportunity to provide two of the boys with exposure and training. This experience also afforded me the chance to receive feedback from someone else, which is invaluable when you are riding on your own most of the time. Tuti and Scout both performed impeccably and I couldn't be more proud of either of them.

We have seen an increase in the colic over the past week. Cold weather is often implicated in the increased incidence of colic, coupled with our recent weather events we have put together a few ideas with feeding and management. The advice is general in nature and doesn't take into account individual horse's specific medical problems or needs.

WATER; Cold water can discourage horses to drink and even be painful for older horses with teeth conditions. Water is best consumed at a temperature between 5 to 15 degrees. It is important to keep an eye on water consumption, (average water intake is 20-50 litres per day depending on size, exercise, ambient temp etc). Lack of water in the diet can lead to impactions which can result in colic.
Adding 30 to 60gms of table salt to your horse's feed can stimulate the thirst response. Soaking the feed with warm water is another way to get some extra fluids into their digestive tract.

Hay is a great way to keep your horse warm from the inside as it is fermented in the hindgut and releases heat in the process. Chewing hay also increases saliva production which buffers gastric acid secretion in the stomach. Chewing also starts the digestive process and can stimulate gut electrical activity. A good guideline is to feed 1.5-2% of the horse's bodyweight per day & increase if the temperature drops. Avoid stalky hay where the stem is tough. Horses and ponies with dental problems generally need to avoid hay, therefore hay pellets or cubes can be used as a substitute.

Exercise is a great way to stimulate the electrical activity of the gut and keep you & your horse warm. Rug up & go for a ride.

Need extra calories; vegetable oil or a processed feed such as Equi jewel is a great way to add calories without increasing the carbohydrates in the diet. Both are easily digestible and will help keep weight on.

Provide shelter, warm rugs etc if your horse is mainly paddocked. Consider fencing off any smelly, discoloured areas where flood water has pooled; believe it or not some horses will drink this!
