Brazilian Jockey Dies at Just 27 After Tragic Mid-Race Fall💔
The Brazilian horse-racing world is mourning the loss of Leandro Henrique, a talented jockey whose life was tragically cut short at just 27 years old.
Henrique suffered a serious fall during a race at Gávea Racecourse in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, August 16, 2026. What began as an ordinary day at the races quickly turned into a heartbreaking fight for his life.
Henrique was riding Native Coffee in the second race of the meeting. During the turn, another horse, Regal Flex, failed to negotiate the bend and moved toward the outside of the track. Native Coffee was forced toward the outer part of the course before going over the protective rail.
Henrique was thrown heavily in the incident.
Emergency medical staff rushed to him and he was taken to Hospital Miguel Couto for treatment.
At first, there was a small sign of hope. Henrique had initially been unconscious after the fall, but later regained consciousness and was able to recognize people close to him, including his agent Danilo Aglio and Victoria Mota, the mother of his daughter.
Doctors discovered that he had suffered a severe open fracture of the hip. He also had an injury to his head and a hematoma above his eyebrow. Fortunately, neurological examinations did not indicate a brain injury.
The damage to his hip was extremely serious, however.
That same evening, doctors performed emergency surgery. The operation lasted several hours, beginning at around 6:30 p.m. and finishing around 10 p.m. An external fixator was placed to stabilize the fracture.
His family, friends, fellow jockeys and racing fans could only wait and hope that he would pull through.
Sadly, he never got the chance to return home.
In the early hours of Wednesday, August 19, Leandro Henrique died from complications following the injuries he suffered in the fall.
He was only 27.
A jockey who had already achieved so much
Henrique’s death is especially heartbreaking because he had already built an impressive career at such a young age.
He had won the Gávea jockey championship three times and had recorded more than 1,000 victories during his career.
One of the moments that racing fans will remember most came in June 2025, when Henrique won the prestigious Grande Prêmio Brasil, one of the biggest races on the Brazilian calendar.
That victory produced an unforgettable scene.
With roughly 50 metres still left to run, Henrique began celebrating because he believed the race was already won. But another horse was still closing quickly.
For a few seconds, it looked as though his early celebration could cost him the race.
It didn’t.
His horse held on and won by just a nose.
It was the kind of moment that captured the excitement and unpredictability of horse racing — and it became one of the memorable images of Henrique’s career.
💔 More than a jockey
Behind the achievements, trophies and races was a young man with a family who loved him.
Henrique was a father to a young daughter. For his family, this tragedy is not about statistics, championships or race results. It is about losing someone at an age when he should have had decades ahead of him.
His fellow jockeys and members of Brazil’s racing community have been left devastated by his death.
A career that had already produced more than 1,000 wins was suddenly brought to an end by one terrible moment on the racecourse.
Leandro Henrique leaves behind memories of his victories, his passion for racing and the many people whose lives he touched.
He was only 27, and there was still so much more to come.
Rest in peace, Leandro Henrique. 🕊️🏇
Gone far too soon, but never forgotten.
