FIP stands for Feline Infectious Peritonitis. It’s a disease caused by a mutated form of a common virus called feline coronavirus (FCoV). Most cats carry this coronavirus without problems, but in some cats, the virus changes and causes FIP.
How does it affect cats?
FIP causes a severe inflammatory reaction inside the cat’s body, often affecting the abdomen, chest, or brain.
Symptoms to watch for:
Fever that doesn’t go away
Loss of appetite and weight
Lethargy (low energy)
Swollen belly (due to fluid buildup)
Difficulty breathing
Eye or neurological problems (in some cases)
Types of FIP:
Wet (Effusive) form: Fluid builds up in the chest or abdomen, causing swelling and breathing problems.
Dry (Non-effusive) form: No fluid buildup, but causes organ damage and neurological symptoms.
Is FIP treatable?
For a long time, FIP was almost always fatal, but now there are some antiviral drugs (like GS-441524) that can help treat it. These treatments can be expensive and require veterinary supervision.
Prevention:
Keep cats indoors to reduce exposure to coronavirus.
Practice good hygiene in multi-cat environments.
Avoid overcrowding in shelters or catteries.
