Many flat-faced pets such as French Bulldog, Pug, and Persian Cat may suffer from a condition called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).
As veterinarians, we always advise pet owners not to ignore noisy breathing, snoring, excessive panting, gagging, or difficulty exercising in these pets. These are not “normal cute sounds” — they may indicate serious airway obstruction affecting your pet’s quality of life and oxygen supply.
Common warning signs include:
Loud breathing or snoring even while resting
Difficulty during hot weather
Exercise intolerance
Blue gums or collapse in severe cases
Sleeping with mouth open
Frequent regurgitation or choking episodes
Important advice for pet owners:
Keep brachycephalic pets in cool environments
Avoid obesity, as excess weight worsens breathing
Limit intense exercise in hot or humid weather
Use harnesses instead of neck collars
Seek veterinary evaluation early before the condition becomes severe
Modern veterinary care, including airway examination, advanced imaging, and corrective soft tissue surgery when needed, can greatly improve breathing comfort and lifespan in affected pets.
