It may seem like a simpler choice, no nappies/diapers, no school fees, no tantrums. But the reality is stark: dogs are not an “easier option.” They need daily structure, long-term financial investment, emotional patience, and a stable home for 12–15 years!
Here in the UAE, we see too many heartbreaking cases of dogs abandoned because owners believed a dog would be less demanding than a child. When the reality set in, the sleepless nights, the vet bills, the lifestyle changes, the dog was left to suffer.
This new blog comes after yet again receiving emails and messages from people wanting to dump their dogs with us for totally unacceptable excuses: no time, no money, allergies, working long hours, retiring, not liking dog hair, or simply not coping with so called unwanted behaviour that they can, with work, change. Each of these reasons points to a lack of responsibility and selfishness, not a fault of the dog.
If raising a child feels overwhelming, then bringing a dog into your life may not be the right solution either. Dogs are not substitutes, they are family, with their own needs and vulnerabilities.
