DO YOU KNOW ANY OTHER CULTURAL DIFFERENCES?

Working as a dog trainer in Dubai has completely changed the way I see dogs, dog ownership, and even dog training itself.

In one city, I meet people from hundreds of different cultural, religious, and personal backgrounds - all with very different beliefs, traditions, comfort zones, and expectations around dogs.

Some view dogs primarily as companions.

Others see them as protectors, workers, or deeply spiritual animals.

Some prioritize freedom and cuddles, others structure and purpose.

And honestly? I find these conversations fascinating.

This post isn’t about judging which approach is “right” or “wrong.” It's about understanding that culture shapes the way people live with dogs far more than we often realize.

The longer I work internationally, the more I believe good dog training also means understanding PEOPLE. 🌍🐾

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC - a journey that should have taken 45 minutes by plane took more than 10 hours by car.

As a Person of Determination travelling with Charlie, my ADI-certified cardiac alert dog, flying directly between GCC country, isn’t currently an option for us. Instead, we always drive through three countries, spent significantly more money, risk of health issues and flare ups, as well a lot of lost time.

Charlie isn’t a pet travelling for convenience. He is a medically trained assistance dog who helps mitigate my disability and keeps me safe. His skills cannot be replaced by a by medical device to date.

This reel isn’t about complaining… we’ve done this road trip about of 10 to 12 hours around 10 x already. It’s about highlighting what inaccessible travel can look like for assistance dog teams. And, hoping it will change one day.

We made it safely 😇. But accessibility shouldn’t require a 10-hour detour.

DON'T GET ME WRONG - doggy birthday parties are super cute and we attended many!

But sometimes I think we need to ask ourselves honestly: is this for the dog… or for us?

What does YOUR DOG actually want?

Because most dogs don’t dream about being surrounded by 20 unfamiliar/familiar dogs in a closed space, loud people, decorations, chaos, cameras in their faces, and a cake they have to “share.” As a trainer, I often observe so much stress at these parties. Dogs displaying displacement behaviors, avoiding interactions, getting overstimulated, and tensions rising the moment food comes out.

Charlie and Sophie’s birthday/gotcha days are always celebrated! But in a way THEY would choose. Small circle, familiar dogs, calm environment (mainly outdoors), freedom to sniff, explore, and just be dogs 💛.

Today that meant heading to the mangroves for a long walk with two carefully selected dog friends Charlie genuinely enjoys spending time with.

I think the best gift we can give our dogs is not the biggest party… but listening to who they are as individuals.

Have you ever hosted or attended a doggy birthday party?

INTELLIGENT DISOBEDIENCE - it's one of the most remarkable skills an assistance dog can have.

When a blind person gives their guide dog the command to cross the street, a well-trained dog will refuse to move if doing so would put the person in danger. That's not a badly behaved dog. That's a dog making a life-saving judgment call. When a cardiac alert dog is asked to stay in a down but then smells an incoming episode, the dog must break the stay on his own to alert.

It can look like the dog is just ignoring its handler. But intelligent disobedience, also called selective disobedience, is actually a quality that is actively sought in assistance dogs working as a team with their handlers.

Have you ever heard about this before?

OVER THE LAST MONTHS I'VE HAD AN INFLUX OF MALTIPOOs FOR TRAINING - a trend and many aren't aware that this isn't a recognized breed.

A Maltipoo is a mix between a Maltese and a Poodle, not a recognized breed with a breed standard, predictable temperament, coat, health or structure.

And no, mixing two breeds together doesn’t automatically make them:
❌ healthier
❌ hypoallergenic
❌ easier to train
❌ “the perfect family dog"
❌ small size

Every dog is an individual, and with mixes, genetics can be even more unpredictable.

This doesn’t mean they can’t be amazing dogs ❤️.

BUT ethical breeding means health testing, purpose, temperament, structure, and preservation - not just combining two cute dogs and creating a trendy name.

BIG DAY FOR BASKERVILLE 🐕‍🦺 - massive thank you to who allowed us, and myself, to let our assistance dog in training team experience their first flight under our guidance.

When training an assistance dog, the main goal is to help a disabled person live an independent life through the assistance of their trained dog. Assistance dogs are dogs performing tasks to mitigate a disability.

During training, we do not only focus on tasks but also on public access. A dog who is nervous, distracted or reactive in public cannot focus on their handler and assist when needed.

Baskerville has undergone intense training over the last months and we are so thankful once again to for allowing us to train on their flights. Also, we appreciate and for their support.

Such exposure trips are essential for handler and dog to build confidence and skills in all kinds of environments.

Well done, Baskerville!

Have you ever seen an assistance dog on a flight?

WE TRAVEL ALL THE TIME - there’s no way I can carry fancy equipment with me.

Whether it’s travel or budget, you really don’t need so many gadgets. Over the next days, I’ll show you what I found and use in our current Airbnb 😅.

Is there anything at home that you use for dog training? Anything that’s normally a regular household item? Share with us 👇

WHICH ONE SURPRISED YOU THE MOST?

Can’t believe I’ve been doing this fabulous job for over 10 years now.

We evolve, we learn, we improve and we change views on certain topics.

Is there anything you changed your view on in terms of dog training?

I SADLY HEAR ABOUT DOGS IN CAR ACCIDENTS A LOT MORE THESE DAYS - dogs can’t brace for a crash. They don’t tense their bodies like we do, they don’t understand what’s about to happen, they’re simply thrown with the force of the impact.

That’s why where (and how) your dog rides in the car matters more than most people think.

🚫 Front passenger seat (or wherever direct airbags hit in your car)
Airbags deploy with extreme force and can cause serious or fatal injuries.

🚫 Sitting on your lap
You lose control and your dog can get crushed between you and the steering wheel.

🚫 Head out the window
Debris, sudden stops, or even a sharp turn can cause injury in seconds.

And something many people don’t think about:
In an accident, an unsecured dog can panic, escape the vehicle, and run off... injured, disoriented, and into even more danger.

Your dog relies on you to keep them safe. Even on the shortest drive.

✅ Use a crash-tested crate
✅ Or a crash-tested, properly fitted harness with a seatbelt attachment
✅ Keep them secured in the back seat or trunk area (with a barrier)

👇Tell me honestly: how does your dog currently ride in the car?
