Why Do We Extract Retained Baby Teeth in Dogs?

Just like children, puppies lose their baby teeth as their adult teeth grow in. Sometimes, the baby teeth do not fall out on their own and remain in place next to the permanent teeth. This is called retained deciduous (baby) teeth.

Why is this important?

🦷 Retained baby teeth can cause:
β€’ Crowding of the adult teeth
β€’ Incorrect bite alignment (malocclusion)
β€’ Increased plaque and tartar buildup
β€’ Gum inflammation and periodontal disease
β€’ Food getting trapped between teeth
β€’ Long-term dental problems and discomfort

When should we wait, and when should we remove them?

🐢 Most puppies lose their baby teeth naturally by 5–6 months of age.

🐢 If a baby tooth is still present after the permanent tooth has erupted, especially by 6 months of age, veterinary extraction is usually recommended.

🐢 In very small, micro, or true teacup-sized puppies, the teething process can be delayed. Some of these puppies may continue changing their teeth until 7–8 months of age, so each case should be evaluated individually by a veterinarian.

🐢 Small and toy breeds such as Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Toy Poodles, and Dachshunds are more prone to retained baby teeth.
