The rainy season comes with increased risk of Lumpy Skin Disease due to the abundance of biting flies insects (Stomoxy, Musca, Tabanids) and mosquitoes. Lumpy Skin is caused by Pox virus of the genus Capripox that can cause lumps to develop on the skin, lymphatic gland swelling, drop in milk production, high fever, decreased feed intake, lameness, infertility and even death in cattle.

Huge financial loses can be incurred. Antibiotics only help to treat secondary infections. The only method to protect your herd is through vaccinating before the onset of the rainy season every year.

That time of the year you may need to do weekly dipping for control of external parasites on your animals. Ticks suck blood, they are also transmit a parasite called babesia causing a disease called Babesiosis aka Tick Fever.
