*BOERBOEL FEET*

The importance of good feet in the Boerboel breed can’t be overstated. Splayed feet and east–west fronts are, in my experience, a major flaw and an ongoing headache. One of my old males had both issues, and every outing turned into a battle with grass seeds wedged between his toes. Those seeds can burrow into the foot and cause serious problems.

My current dog is the complete opposite—tight, well-arched feet and a straight front. I can take her through the thickest foxtail grass, check his paws afterwards, and find them completely clean. he also moves far better because he is built correctly.

Plenty of things can be overlooked, but feet genuinely make a huge difference in my opinion.

🐾 What NOT to Do When You Meet a New Dog! 🐶

Meeting a new dog is exciting — but remember, not all dogs love strangers right away. Here are a few quick tips to keep both you and the dog safe 👇

🚫 Don’t rush in – Let the dog come to you first.
🚫 Don’t stare into their eyes – Dogs may see this as a challenge.
🚫 Don’t lean over or hug – It can make them feel trapped or scared.
🚫 Don’t grab or pet without permission – Always ask the owner first.
🚫 Don’t scream or make sudden moves – Stay calm and gentle.

Ask the owner if you may touch the dog!

*Partnership between Boerboel Alliance of Zambia and Novatek Animal Feeds*

We are pleased to announce the launch of a collaborative exercise between the Boerboel Alliance of Zambia (BAZ) and Novatek Animal Feeds, renowned producers of the Nova Dog feed brand. This strategic partnership reflects the mutual desire of both parties to address the specific feed requirements of breeders and dog owners, ultimately enhancing the health and well-being of dogs in Zambia.
The primary objective of this initiative is to gather firsthand information on the performance of Nova Dog feed among breeders and dog owners. Novatek's chief nutritionist, along with their team, will conduct kennel visits and engage with dog owners to:
- Gather feedback on the efficacy of Nova Dog feed
- Identify areas for improvement and potential challenges faced by dog owners
- Inform the development of tailored nutritional solutions

The exercise will culminate in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BAZ and Novatek. Key highlights of the partnership are;

1. Professional guidance on dog nutrition for BAZ members
2. Exclusive discounted prices on Novatek's feed products

*Benefits to Members*

Through this partnership, BAZ members will benefit from:
- Expert advice on dog nutrition and health
- Access to high-quality feed at discounted prices
- Improved health and well-being of their dogs
. Assured ready acces to feed

If you are interested in being part of this initiative, kindly indicate your interest by contacting us. Further details will be shared in due course.

Jacobson’s organ

Next time you’re brushing your dog’s teeth (you do, right? 😄), check out that little bump on the roof of the mouth, just behind the front teeth. That’s called the incisive papilla, and inside it is a tiny opening to one of your dog’s coolest tools — the Jacobson’s organ (or vomeronasal organ).

This organ lets your dog taste smells! 🐾💨 It connects the mouth and nose, so when your dog sniffs, licks the air, or does that funny “tooth chatter,” they’re gathering invisible information that humans can’t sense.

Through this organ, dogs can:
🐕 Detect pheromones — the scents other dogs leave behind.
👩‍👧 Find and recognise their owners or other animals.
🐶 Help newborn puppies find their mother right after birth.
💞 Sense when a female is in season.

That “air licking” or little grin your dog sometimes does? That’s them using their Jacobson’s organ. Dogs don’t curl their lips like cats or horses do (the Flehmen response), but they have their own way of reading the world.

What Defines a True Boerboel

When people see a Boerboel for the first time, the first word that comes to mind is often “massive.”
But true Boerboel excellence goes far beyond size.
The SABBS breed standard emphasises structure, balance, and temperament — three pillars that define what a Boerboel should be.

Every detail has purpose:
• A broad, muscular chest for power and endurance.
• A strong neck to support the head and control during movement.
• A well-developed rear to drive the dog forward with effortless power.
• And eyes — intelligent, steady, and full of confidence.

The Boerboel should be athletic, agile, and functional — not exaggerated or bulky beyond reason.
SABBS appraisers assess each dog against this detailed standard to ensure the breed remains a reflection of strength and stability. A true Boerboel moves with confidence, stands with purpose, and thinks before it acts.

Balance is everything — too much or too little of any feature disturbs what nature perfected through generations of purpose breeding.

💬 What trait do you believe best represents the Boerboel’s power and purpose?

The Value of SABBS Appraisals

SABBS appraisals are often misunderstood, but they play a vital role in preserving the quality and future of the Boerboel breed.
An appraisal is not a competition — it’s an evaluation of how closely a Boerboel aligns with the official breed standard.
Each dog is assessed on structure, movement, temperament, and overall functional soundness by certified SABBS appraisers who undergo specific training and accreditation.

Appraisals provide breeders and owners with valuable insight into their dogs’ strengths and weaknesses.
It’s not about chasing a high score — it’s about understanding your Boerboel’s place within the breed and where improvement can be made.
A well-done appraisal highlights both excellence and areas for refinement, giving breeders the knowledge needed to make better breeding decisions.

The result? Stronger, more consistent generations that continue to represent the Boerboel’s true South African identity.

📸 Have you ever attended a SABBS appraisal? Share your experience or what you learned from it.

Dogs can truly sense bad people. They can smell stress and fear through hormones like cortisol, and they notice even the smallest changes in voice, movement, or scent.

Even if someone smiles, a dog can sense hidden anger or bad intentions. That’s why they growl at some strangers but instantly trust others. Their instincts never lie,..they know who’s good and who’s not. 🤎🖤🩶

Bone Broth – Healing for Humans & Health for Boerboels 🐾✨

When I broke my fibula during lockdown, I couldn’t get to a physiotherapist for months. Friends kept recommending (collagen) bone broth – and they were right! It helped me recover and even made my hair and nails grow faster and stronger. 💪🌿

Now, I also give bone broth to my Boerboels – and they absolutely thrive on it!

💛 Benefits for Boerboels:
🦴 Strengthens bones & joints
💧 Keeps them hydrated
🐾 Supports gut health & digestion
💪 Aids muscle recovery
✨ Boosts coat shine & overall vitality

🥣 Recipe idea:
Simmer beef bones or chicken feet with water, a splash of apple cider vinegar, and a few veggies (like carrots or celery) for 8–12 hours. Strain, cool, and serve a little at a time.

⚠️ Avoid salt and never feed cooked bones.

Healthy inside and out — for you and your Boerboel! 💕🐕

🐾 Choke Chains & Boerboels – Let’s Talk About It 🐾

Boerboels are strong, powerful dogs, and that’s exactly why proper leash training from puppyhood is so important.

If you use positive reinforcement and consistent training from the start, you’ll never need to pull on a choke chain. It becomes more of a communication tool, not a punishment device.

🚫 Please don’t use a choke chain to lift or control your dog — whether puppy or adult. Pulling or jerking can cause serious injury to the trachea and thyroid, leading to long-term health issues.

✅ A well-trained Boerboel should respond to the gentlest pressure, knowing it’s time to stand still or stay calm.
Remember: training should build trust, respect, and understanding, not fear.
