I Stopped Buying Fish Meal After Learning This Trick!
Fish meal is one of the best protein sources for chickens, but it’s expensive. The good news is you can make cheap and effective alternatives at home using ingredients available in Nigeria.
These alternatives will still help your chickens grow well, gain weight, and lay eggs properly.
1. Maggot Meal (The Best Natural Alternative)
Maggots are 45–60% protein, almost the same as fish meal.
How to Produce Maggots
1. Get a bucket or basin.
2. Put chicken intestines, spoilt fish, or palm kernel chaff inside.
3. Cover with wire mesh (to prevent chickens from entering).
4. Leave for 3–5 days.
5. Maggots will gather at the bottom.
6. Wash, boil for 5–10 minutes, and sun-dry.
How to Use
Add 10–20% of maggot meal to your feed formula.
2. Termite Meal
Termites are rich in protein and very easy to harvest.
How to Collect Termites
1. Get termite mound soil.
2. Put it inside a bucket.
3. Add water and wait 15 minutes.
4. Termites will float up.
5. Sieve them out, boil, and sun-dry.
How to Use
Add 5–10% termite meal to feed.
3. Earthworm Meal
Earthworms have high-quality protein that helps broilers grow fast.
How to Prepare
1. Collect earthworms from moist soil or compost.
2. Wash thoroughly.
3. Boil for 5 minutes.
4. Sun-dry until crispy.
5. Grind into powder.
How to Use
Add 5–15% worm meal to the feed.
4. Blood Meal (Slaughterhouse Alternative)
Blood meal is very high protein, but must be prepared cleanly.
How to Make
1. Collect fresh animal blood (cow, goat).
2. Pour into a wide pan.
3. Cook on low heat while stirring until dry.
4. Break into pieces and sun-dry.
5. Grind into powder.
How to Use
Add 3–7% blood meal to feed.
(Use small amount because it is strong.)
5. Groundnut Cake / Soya Meal Mix
A combination of plant proteins can replace fish meal if balanced properly.
Mix Example
50% Groundnut cake
50% Toasted soya beans
Grind together and add to the feed.
How to Use
Add 10–20% of this mixture to feed.
6. Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)
If you know how to produce them, BSFL are even better than maggots.
Steps similar to maggot production but more controlled.
How to Choose the Best Alternative
For best results, use a combination like:
Maggot meal + Groundnut cake
or
Termite meal + Soya meal
Combining ensures balanced protein.
Example Cheap Homemade Protein Mix (Per 1kg)
300g maggot meal
200g soya meal
200g groundnut cake
100g termite meal
200g maize or wheat bran
This gives a strong protein source for broilers, layers, and local chickens.
