Foot and mouth disease

Please note that the Bapsfontein area is under quarantine for Foot and mouth disease.

No, humans can't contract the disease and meat is still safe to consume. But each one of us has a responsibility to help stop the spread. If you have any contact with cloven-hooved animals, please disinfect your feet and vehicle tyres after contact with them or their environment. Also, disinfect after being in contact with other high-risk areas like your Co-op or your vet.

Report any clinical signs like excessive salivation and lameness to your local statevet.

Also note that special permits are necessary for any movement of cloven-hoofed animals from your premises.

Protect your cattle against 3-day stiff sickness. 3-day stiff sickness is a viral disease that is transmitted by midges and mosquitoes. Animals can experience fever, stiffness and also lying down unable to get up.

Beftect is safe to use in cows during all stages of pregnancy. And won't affect milk production in lactating animals. The fertility of bulls won't be affected.

Take action now to protect your horse against this deadly outbreak.

2. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲. Control midges with a good DEET-containing product like Vetsbrand Summer Spray. Stay away from products containing ineffective ingredients like citronella oil.

3. 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Take temperatures daily. Check for swellings around the eyes, legs and body.

4. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀. Take bloods for confirmation. Unfortunately, blood results can take a few days, but it helps to confirm what virus is causing the symptoms. It helps the vaccine producers update the vaccines. It helps the state to control equine movement and protect our export market. It helps your vet to know what viruses are active in the area so that other patients can be diagnosed earlier.

5. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗣. Anti-inflammatories and heart supportive medication are available to increase your horse's chance of survival. Please don't treat with unregistered products, as some of these products can put a lot of strain on the already compromised organs.

🐴 Horses: Make sure they have proper shelter, dry bedding, and waterproof rugs if needed.

🐄 Farm Animals: Keep pens dry and protected from the wind. Check water sources for freezing.

🐕🐈 Pets: Bring them indoors or create warm, insulated spaces with access to clean water and food.

This past week multiple positive cases of African Horse Sickness were confirmed in Gauteng and the rest of the country. Make sure to protect your horse against the deadly infection.
