FREEDOM IN ACTION | Block BB Freedom Day Cleanup

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came through on Freedom Day to clean the pathway connecting Block BB to Soshanguve Mall. Your time, energy, tools, spirit and teamwork helped turn action into change.

Re leboga gape to all our supporters and partners who contributed in different ways — your kindness made the day possible.

This was more than a cleanup. It was community, unity, purpose, and a reminder that freedom is also the choice to care for the spaces we share.

📍 Next Cleanup: 9 May
We hope to see even more people joining us as we continue making Block BB a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful community for all.

More hands. More ideas. More community.

Together, we CAN!💚because SoshCAN! - Soshanguve Community Action Network!

Action is the best way to celebrate Earth Day. 🌍
For Earth Day 2026, we focused on the theme "Our Power, Our Planet, Our Community."💚
This Monday, our team demonstrated exactly what that looks like at the Noxolo Crescent Community Garden.

Environmental restoration doesn't always start with a global policy—it starts in our streets and our local gardens. By clearing weeds, transplanting flowers, and preparing for the winter season, we are taking ownership of our environment.

Grateful for the support of Little Thunder Spur, Botshilu Private Hospital, and Keeping Soshanguve Clean in making this activation a success.

From weeding to winter planting, the Noxolo Community Garden is officially refreshed! 🌱✨ Check out the highlights from our clean-up below. 🎥

Did You Know? 🤔

That TODAY - Join Hands Day (Thursday, 02 May) isn't just another date on the calendar—it’s a global movement where generations unite to transform our neighbourhoods☘️

Originally started to bridge the gap between young and old through service, it has become a powerful day of action worldwide✨

How this connects to the TUB and SoshCAN! Ethos: 🌱
At the Township Urban Beautification Project (TUB), we believe our hands are our greatest tools for change. Our mission aligns perfectly with this day because we don't just "clean up"—we reclaim.
• Community Unity: We bring together the energy of our youth and the wisdom of our elders to work side-by-side.
• Environmental Action: We take "dead" spaces—like illegal dumping sites—and give them life by turning them into lush food gardens.
• Food Security: With yesterday’s steep fuel increase, we know transport and food prices are set to soar. TUB’s core belief is that growing our own food is no longer just a "good idea"—it’s a common-sense LIVING strategy for everyone🌻

The TUB Message for 2026🏋🏿‍♂️
Clean spaces. Growing spaces. Food-secure communities.

By joining hands, we ensure that every corner of our township doesn't just look better—it feeds us.

Together we clean. Together we grow. Together we build. 🇿🇦

Change is a team sport!

We had an absolutely incredible turnout for our inaugural event at Padisago Primary School. Seeing the community come together—from parents and learners to the team at the Agricultural Research Council—was truly inspiring.

A huge shoutout to our partners at Keeping Soshanguve Clean and the hardworking in-service students from the University of Pretoria – JCP Team 367 for their energy and enthusiasm.

This is just the beginning for our green spaces!

This invitation video was created by our University of Pretoria JCP Team 367 ahead of our Human Rights Day community event this past Saturday — calling on the community to come together, participate, and take ownership of our shared spaces.

And what a success it was. We were encouraged to see learners, parents, residents, teachers, and school staff come out in numbers to be part of the day.

Their energy, participation, and willingness to engage made this a truly meaningful Human Rights Day in action.

A dream that began in Cape Town in 2013 — as a 2014 World Design Capital submission — has finally come to life where it’s needed most: in South Africa’s townships.

Introducing the Township Urban Beautification (TUB) Project — more than a project, it’s a movement.
Our mission is simple, yet profound: to transform neglected township spaces into clean, green, and creative environments that inspire pride, dignity, and progress.

We work at the intersection of community, education, and sustainable development — turning learning into action and ideas into impact:
🌱 Living Classrooms: In partnership with schools and tertiary institutions, we transform gardens, murals, parks, and clean-up zones into spaces of learning and growth — where environmental awareness, design thinking, and practical skills come alive.
🎨 Creative Collaborations: Together with local businesses, artists, urban farmers, and civic partners, we reimagine public spaces to promote food security, social cohesion, and environmental resilience.

Every beautified site becomes a living testament to what’s possible when design, education, and community come together for good — growing food where there was once waste, planting colour where there was once concrete, and building futures where hope had faded.

This is our beginning.
Watch our story, see the vision come to life, and join us as we build something beautiful — leaving behind value that truly lasts. 🌍✨
