🐾 Day 6 of Tailwaggers Grooming Course: Water Temperature is Everything!

It’s amazing how a deep dive into the fundamentals of grooming can be so exciting.

Today’s focus was on a simple but critical element: water temperature.
We had a detailed session on why using cold water during a bath is a huge no-no.

It can cause a painful condition known as limber tail syndrome (or “cold water tail”), where the tail muscles essentially cramp up, leaving the tail limp and sensitive. We use lukewarm water to ensure the dog is always comfortable and safe. No frozen tails on our watch!

It’s these foundational details that separate a good groom from a great, compassionate one.

Last week, we had the privilege of looking after the CUTEST 12-week old cockatiel, Spokie. It was a joy to feed porridge to the baby and walk around with him. 🐥😍
He just recently joined a family who Chezré has been taking care of since he was in his late teens!
2 macaws, a budgie, and 2 chinchillas are also part of the wonderful family 🥰

🐕 Dog Health Learning Time! What is Black Skin Disease?

📝 What Is It?

Black skin disease, Alopecia X, or Hair Cycle Arrest, is a non-inflammatory disease that interferes with the normal hair regrowth cycle, causing progressive loss of hair and darkened skin in the areas where hair loss occurs.

Black skin disease It most frequently manifests on the back, legs, and tail.

🤕 What Causes It?

Although the exact cause is unknown, most experts believe that an imbalance in s*x hormones and adrenal glands, along with some genetic components, is highly suspected to cause it. Hormonal changes induced by spaying and neutering could also be a contributing factor.

🐶 Most Impacted Breeds:

🐾 Pomeranians
🐾 Chow Chows
🐾 Alaskan Malamutes
🐾 Siberian Huskies
🐾 Miniature and toy Poodles

💕 Important Reminder:

Make sure your groomer is educated to not cut dog hair too short on the above breeds, and that they follow proper hygiene and techniques.
