Celebrating innovation and environmental stewardship! 🌿✨

Through our Schools-Environment Program, Backyard Farmers—in partnership with DFFE, SANBI, and Ranyaka Community Transformation—hosted the Finale of the Green Schools Competition at Diep in Die Berg to honor the outstanding solutions created by our learners.

We were completely blown away by Magaliesburg SOS, who built a fully functional aquaponics system! 🐟🌱 Their creativity and commitment to sustainable solutions inspire us all.

Yesterday, Backyard Farmers, through our Schools-Environment Program, hosted the Green-Schools Competition Finale at Diep in die Berg, in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment , South African National Biodiversity Institute , and Community Transformation .

The competition challenged learners to develop innovative solutions that protect human well-being in a changing climate, encouraging them to think creatively and take an active role in shaping a more sustainable future.

Congratulations to all our winners! Thank you to every learner, educator, and partner who contributed to making this competition a success.

See you again next year as we continue nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders!

Our Garden-School Programme would be a great integration to the current curriculum

We are teaching them the sustainable way of doing agriculture, introducing them to Marigold for pest control, which through its roots secrete biochemicals into the soil that naturally suppress destructive root-knot nematodes.

It is also good for companion Planting. Their strong scent repels common garden pests like aphids, whiteflies, and beetles

Through this initiative, we aim to ensure that every participating school produces learners who are equipped with practical skills and confidence to grow their own food.

Our Garden-School Program has landed at Emasangweni Primary School!

Through hands-on learning, Backyard Farmers will help children grow their own food, care for the environment and develop lifelong skills—with harvests supporting the school kitchen.

The programme aligns with South Africa’s National Policy on Food and Nutrition Security and the National School Nutrition Programme’s promotion of school food gardens and nutrition education.

As part of our contribution to the wellbeing of the Hammanskraal community and the expansion of its green cover, Backyard Farmers, the City of Tshwane, and the Tshwane Youth Climate Action Network (TY-CAN) brought together schools and local organisations to commemorate Arbor Month.

The initiative aimed to raise environmental awareness, promote environmental stewardship, and plant trees on school premises, contributing to greener, healthier, and more sustainable learning environments and communities.

The Backyard Farmers Garden-School Program is now at Mahube Primary School! 🌱

Through hands-on gardening, we teach learners how to grow their own food while helping schools establish and maintain productive, sustainable food gardens. These gardens serve as practical learning spaces, nurture environmental responsibility, and provide fresh produce to support school kitchens.

Every child should have the skills to grow food, and every school should have a thriving, functional food garden.
