Hamsters are natural burrowers and often build their burrows beneath large objects. These burrows aren’t just tunnels, they’re their safe space 🤍

When heavy items like wheels or ceramic hideouts are placed directly on bedding, those burrows can collapse… even if the bedding looks deep enough. This can destroy their tunnels and may even lead to injury.

That’s why it’s so important to support heavier items on stable platforms.

In their natural environment, Syrian hamsters run an average of 8–12 kilometers every night. This is remarkable when you consider their tiny bodies and short legs.

Because pet hamsters do not have endless open spaces to explore and forage as they would in the wild, it is important that we provide them with resources that allow them to express these natural behaviors.

A lack of proper exercise opportunities can significantly impact a hamster’s wellbeing, both physically and mentally. This may lead to problems such as obesity, muscle weakness, joint strain, stress, boredom, agitation, and even aggression.

While most people know that hamsters need a running wheel, new hamster owners often visit a local pet store to purchase one — and this is where good intentions can sometimes meet poor advice or limited product options.

Many wheels commonly sold in pet stores are unfortunately unsuitable. These include metal grid wheels, which can injure delicate feet, and wheels that appear large but are actually designed for dwarf hamsters rather than Syrian hamsters.

Choosing the correct wheel size and design is essential for your hamster’s wellbeing.

A hamster should be able to run with a straight back. If the wheel is too small and causes their back to arch, it can lead to discomfort, spinal injury, breathing difficulty, and sometimes complete abandonment of the wheel.

𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐬

🐹 Dwarf hamsters: approximately 25 cm diameter
🐹 Syrian hamsters: approximately 30 cm diameter
🐭 Mice: approximately 25 cm diameter

🐀 Rats: wheels are generally not recommended for adult rats due to their long spines. However, if a wheel is provided, it should be very large (around 35 cm or more).

Providing the correct equipment is one of the simplest ways to support the health, comfort, and natural behaviors of your small pets.
