UPDATE: 29 August 2025
The Eagle has landed!!!!! ✈️🇮🇪
Blaze has arrived safely in Ireland, and we couldn’t be happier for this beautiful ginger boy. 🐾

✈️💙 Today we wish our handsome Blaze bon voyage as he jet-sets off to Ireland to be reunited with his loving family!

Wayne from PETport collected him this today, and tomorrow Blaze will be off to State Vet for his health clearance - which we know he’ll pass with flying colours. After that, he’ll be staying overnight elsewhere 😢 before his scheduled flight on Wednesday. By Friday, Blaze will be back in the arms of the family who adore him beyond measure. 🐾💞

Blaze, we wish you the most wonderful life ahead in your new home - your family loves you madly, and we couldn’t be happier for you.

To all the pet parents who take their fur-babies with them when relocating - we salute you and thank you. 🐕🐈💚🐾 Your commitment means the world.

Very interesting - as I’ve already touched on in a previous post about the importance of Pet Insurance when facing huge, unexpected expenses for your cats. Now it’s here in black and white from a trusted Veterinary Practice: Pet Insurance is a great safety net, but make sure you know exactly what you are covered for and where the limits are.

Cheaper is not necessarily better, and expensive is not necessarily all it seems to be. Read the fine print, ask questions, and ensure the cover truly meets your cat’s needs - before you find yourself in an emergency o out of pocket or having to euthanise your pet due to the Insurance not covering the bill.

🚨 A Shocking Reality Check 🚨

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen several patients needing specialist care. Most had insurance. You’d think that means their bills were covered, right? Sadly… no.

Too many pet insurance companies don’t live up to their promises when it really matters. Some policies exclude or limit the exact care pets need most in emergencies:

❌ CT & MRI scans (costing up to R25,000)
❌ Emergency surgery – with cover capped at R2,000, while bills often exceed R34,000
❌ Emergency transfers & hospitalisation
❌ Breed & age exclusions
❌ Cancer not covered (even our vet Kath’s dog Dudley was rejected!)

It’s devastating to watch families who’ve diligently paid their premiums left with no financial help in life-or-death moments. Small claims for ear infections? Usually fine. But when the stakes are high, the “cheaper” companies often leave owners stranded.

💔 We’ve seen an 11-month-old puppy euthanised because insurance refused to cover accident-related hip surgery.
💔 We’ve seen owners forced to pay out of pocket for urgent scans after suspected spinal injury — thankfully it was meningitis, not a broken neck, but the costs were brutal.

👉 Our plea to you: Check your policy. Don’t assume you’re covered for emergencies, accidents, or specialist referrals — these can easily run into the tens of thousands of Rands.

We’re happy to guide you on which companies to avoid, and which ones actually do right by pets and owners.

Protect your pets. Protect yourself. Don’t get caught out. 🐾

🐱 National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day 🐾

I think I wrote about a post earlier in the month about the importance of taking your cat to the vet for health checks and regular vaccinations and bloods.

Well today was a reminder of something so important yet often overlooked - our cats need regular vet visits too! 🩺 Many people assume because cats are independent and good at hiding pain, that they’re always “fine.” But the truth is, cats are masters of disguise when it comes to illness. By the time they show obvious symptoms, the problem may already be advanced.

✔️ Annual check-ups (or twice yearly for seniors) help catch issues like dental disease, kidney problems, diabetes, and arthritis early - when treatment is far more effective.
✔️ Vaccinations and parasite control keep them safe from preventable diseases.
✔️ Even indoor cats benefit from regular exams - from weight management to routine bloodwork, prevention is always better than cure.

As cat parents, we owe it to our furry family members to give them the best chance at a long, healthy, happy life. 💚

So if it’s been a while since your cat last saw the vet, take this as your sign to book that appointment today! 🐾

Because love means care - and care means check-ups. 💕

🌈💔 Today our hearts are heavy, as we say our final goodbye to Sam, our regal old gentleman of 19 years, who has crossed over the rainbow bridge last night.😢

Sam touched us all with his grumpy little ways, but oh how he made us laugh and smile💚😆. He was truly one of a kind - proud, dignified, and deeply loved for simply being himself. We wouldn’t have wanted him any other way.
We find comfort in knowing that Sam lived the most wonderful life with his devoted mom, who gave him nothing less than the very best medical care and endless love, right until the end. There was never any fault in her devotion - only selfless care for her boy.
Sam, you are now free of your old body and pain. Fly high, beautiful soul. 🕊️ You will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Run free at the rainbow bridge, sweet boy - until we meet again. 🌹💙

💚 Today, our hearts are heavy as we have been given the sad news of the passing of our precious guest, Teddy - a beautiful soul who touched all our lives. He lived a good life, a full life, and love-filled life, cherished every single day by his devoted parents. 💚

Teddy’s gentle nature, quiet grace, and loving spirit brought warmth and joy to everyone who knew him. It was an honour to care for him, to see the sparkle in his eyes, and to witness the deep bond he shared with his family.

While Teddy’s paws may no longer walk this earth, his memory will forever leave imprints on our hearts 💚💔and his beautiful face will be posted on our Memorial Wall. 🕊

Rest peacefully, sweet Teddy - you have no idea how much you are missed and were so deeply loved, you will never be forgotten. 🌈🐾🪽🌈

Today we celebrate the wonderful, quirky, and deeply loved domestic cats who bring comfort, joy, and companionship into our lives. Whether they’re curled up on the couch, greeting us at the door, or giving us their famous side-eye, they are truly part of the family.

But with this celebration comes a gentle reminder: being a responsible cat owner is the greatest act of love you can give.

✨ Vaccinate.
✨ Sterilise.
✨ Keep them safe.

Far too many cats are abandoned or surrendered because people don’t realize that commitment means more than feeding - it’s about long-term care, health, and protection.

If you love your cat, show it through action.

🐾Sterilise to prevent unwanted litters.
🐾Keep your cat indoors or provide a safe outdoor enclosure to protect them from disease, danger, and disappearing forever.

Today, we celebrate one of the most beloved and mysterious companions in our lives – cats! Whether they're curled up in a sunny spot at home, roaming freely with their feral colony, or safe and sound at a boarding facility like ours, every cat deserves recognition, respect, and love.

At Catopia, cats aren't just boarders – they're family. From our youngest to our seniors, each one carries a unique story, personality, and charm that makes them unforgettable. 💛

But International Cat Day is more than just cuddles and cute photos – it's also a reminder of the responsibilities we have as humans to care for and protect these incredible creatures:

🩺 Sterilise & Vaccinate – Too many unwanted litters are born into harsh conditions. Sterilisation saves lives, and vaccinations help protect against deadly diseases.

🏡 Adopt, Don’t Shop – So many cats (especially black cats, seniors, or those with special needs) wait in rescues for someone to give them a second chance.

🐈‍⬛ Support Feral Cats – Not all cats are meant to be house pets. Many live as free-roaming ferals, and they too deserve compassion. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs are the most humane way to reduce overpopulation and ensure feral cats live healthier lives.

🐾 Provide a Safe Space – Whether it’s a secure catio, a loving home, or a calm, well-designed cattery like ours, cats thrive when they feel safe and stress-free.
