We recently had this boy admitted to Vetscape for acute colic symptoms and prolonged diarrhoea. Our team performed abdominal radiographs and diagnosed a sand impaction of his large colon. He was medically managed with IV fluid therapy, regular walking, oral chia seeds and nasogastric tubing for several days but he continued to display mild colicky signs and his impaction was not resolving.

Upon re-examination, the impaction was very firm and a large colon displacement was felt. We don’t do this very often but our team made the decision to start him on re**al fluids. We are very happy to report that Alyosha (affectionately known as Loshi) responded well and turned a corner. He started passing more droppings and steadily brightened up during his regular walks and lunging sessions 🐎

Follow-up radiographs showed that his sand impaction had finally resolved! We’re wishing Loshi a bright and sandless future 😉

For the past few years, Laika has been a lifeline for so many dogs in their most critical moments through her generous blood donations.

Today marked her final donation. As she celebrates her 7th birthday, she officially retires from being an eligible donor, leaving behind a legacy of lives saved and hope restored.

Laika, happy birthday 🎈 and thank you for every donation and every life saved.

Blood donation saves lives. If your pet is able, consider giving another dog the same gift Laika so selflessly gave.

The secret’s officially out!

We are now offering radiation therapy on a case-to-case basis.

Radiation therapy plays an important role in veterinary oncology, helping to manage certain cancers, improve quality of life and support patient outcomes as part of a tailored treatment plan.

A big step forward for our oncology team and the patients we care for.

Meet Dr. Thalia Bardien 🐎

Dr. Thalia graduated from Onderstepoort in 2024 and decided to partake in Vetscape’s Equine Internship after her CCS year to gain more hands on experience. Rest assured, she’s gaining the practical experience that she’s been seeking and we are excited to see what the 2026 breeding season has in store for her!

After only a few short months, Dr. Thalia is already finding her feet within our hospital and has developed a love for anaesthesia and internal medicine 🩺 We’re wishing her all the best for the remainder of her internship with us!

This horse was referred to us for a non-healing wound over his point-of-hock after his stitches broke down and failure of primary closure occurred. When this happens, leaving a wound to heal through secondary intention can often be the next best thing to do. This process requires an extended period of time for fibroblasts to gradually drive tissue regeneration and pull the edges of the wound together.

Wounds need limited movement to heal, so with the use of a modified Robert-Jones bandage, splint and box rest, we were able to restrict the movement of his hock joint effectively. This allowed his body to do what it needed to do and gave his wound time to heal through secondary intention.

There are 2 types of gastric ulcers that affect horses and foals - squamous and glandular ulceration. Both can be diagnosed with a gastroscopy which is what our team took part in today.

Squamous ulceration is graded based on severity and we confirmed the presence of grade 4 squamous ulcers in this foal. The widespread bleeding ulcers have been treated with Omeprazole and we hope that this baby is feeling some relief already!

Some symptoms to look out for if you suspect your horse is suffering from gastric ulcers are:

• Chronic colic signs
• Appetite loss
• Teeth grinding
• Dull coat

We really do have a dream team ❤️ from urgent surgical cases to intensive care medical cases, our team does it all and we’re so grateful for every single person making Vetscape the special place that it is.
