Did you know? 🐍

Snakes don’t use their tongues to “taste” in the way we do — they use them to collect tiny scent particles from the air and their surroundings.

These particles are then analysed by a special organ in the roof of their mouth, called the Jacobson’s organ, helping them understand what is nearby, from food to potential danger.

Just another reason snakes are so fascinating! 👀

Did you know? 🐍

The snouted cobra uses its famous “hood” as a warning display when it feels threatened. It’s not trying to be aggressive — it’s trying to say, “Please keep your distance.”

Snakes play an important role in the environment, and understanding their behaviour helps us respect them from a safe distance.

DID YOU KNOW? 🐍

Snakes don’t blink.

Instead of eyelids, they have a transparent protective scale covering their eyes, often called a ‘spectacle’.

This helps protect their eyes while moving through sand, grass, and tight spaces.

It’s also why they always look like they’re staring 👀

Tiny shells, big responsibility 🐢

We’ve recently welcomed four leopard tortoises — two adults and two tiny babies, only 3 weeks old.

Leopard tortoises are one of Southern Africa’s most recognisable species, known for their beautiful patterned shells and calm nature.

But here’s something important many people don’t realise:

🚫 It is illegal to remove tortoises from the wild or keep them as pets without the proper permits. Doing so can result in heavy fines or even jail time.

Wild tortoises play an important role in their ecosystem and belong exactly where they are.

Come meet them on one of our guided tours and see just how different each tortoise can be.
