Planning for the coming breeding season? Thinking of covering your mare with one of Karorado’s stallions?
Here is what you need to know:
All our coverings are done live. We will assess the mare and see if she’d be a better candidate for in-hand or for loose cover. The mare will be teased with the stallion that will cover her to make sure she cycles properly before cover. All coverings are live foal guarantee, but if you bring your mare back for covering you will need to pay for the livery at R1800/month as well as pregnancy confirmation. Initial Cover fee include livery for 6 weeks as well as pregnancy confirmation scan as well as however many coverings the mare needs in the initial 6 weeks. Discount for groups of mares can be negotiated.
Both our resident stallions, Dwasdouw Vlam (SP Nooitgedacht) and Karorado Embuia (A-appendix Nooitgedacht) are inspected and their progeny are eligible for registration for the book they qualify for. Both stallions are CEM negative. For this reason all mares must have a CEM negative panel two weeks prior to her coming to stud.
Best time of year to breed depends on when you plan to wean. At Karorado Stud we breed between October and February for our own mares because of when we want to wean and when we want foals to be born. For outside mares we prefer to breed between September and December so that if the mare absorbs we still have time to cover on that year’s foal cycle.
Not all mares are good candidates for breeding. Make sure she has no congenital issues. If she is a maiden mare, make sure she has good conformation for riding as well as breeding. If she had to retire early due to wear and tear from general use, you might want to reconsider. Proven mares are a plus because then you can see easily what her contribution might be. Remember no stallion can fix all mares. Rather look at both parents’ worst traits and imagine if you would be okay if that foal was born that inherited the worst.
Finally we believe that nature is inherently smart and that we won’t force a breeding if for whatever reason the mare does not want to be covered or keep the pregnancy. after a second try we might recommend choosing another one of our stallions or you can get the refund excluding the livery.
