We are all about Gundogs...not a specific breed or hunting style....All Gundogs! We have had success with all the breeds found in SA. you will see Vizsla's , Weimaraners, Brittany's, Drahthaars , German Short hairered Pointers, Pointers, Setters, Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Flat Coated Retrievers as well as occassionally some of the rarer breeds such as Chesap

eake Bay Retrievers, Italiano Spinone's, Chesky Fousek's Long Haired Weimaraner's and Wire Haired Vizsla's. this is a world class dog training facility led by Matthew Berry, set on 650 hectares of pristine natural surroundings.

Did you know a Border Collie is helping keep OR Tambo's runways safe from bird strikes? 🐾✈️

Meet Henry 18 months old, just starting his career, and already stepping into one of the most important roles at one of Africa's busiest airports.

Bird strikes are a serious aviation hazard. Birds on runways can bring down aircraft. Henry's job is to patrol, chase, and manage those birds at OR Tambo International and he does it better than any machine can.

Pictured here is Boavida's chief trainer Cheri Watson (left) alongside Melissa Hofmann, Senior Wildlife Officer from ACSA (right) two dedicated women building a working partnership that quite literally keeps our skies safe. 🛫

15 February changed things at Boavida....

Saxon's first litter hit the ground and everything we'd worked toward with this dog suddenly made sense in the best possible way.

Hielos Saxon carries some of the finest British working Labrador blood available.

Conceived in the UK, born in South Africa, sired by lines that include Drumgoose Warlord, Drakeshead, Lowforge and Gable Croft. His dam, Caseway's Dusk Till Dawn "Arwen," an import from Germany.
These pups are bred for the field. Wing shooting, waterfowl, detection, tracking the full picture.

From our kennels to her forever home. Runa has officially graduated her Puppy Development Course and is now living her best life in the Waterberg! 🐾

This exceptional Drahthaar girl, bred from our outstanding Jork x Kaya pairing, is already turning heads. Pointing. Retrieving. And as you can see… absolutely obsessed with water. 🌊

After 4 incredible years with the Boavida Wingshooting team, C**t is off to his next great adventure! 🌾

He developed into the kind of hunting dog every handler dreams of hunting hard country, working birds with unmatched intensity and style, and sharing unforgettable days in the field.

Now, he’s settled on a beautiful farm near Somerset East where he’ll keep hunting Greywing francolin in the mountains but with the added perk of being a spoiled, couch-loving family dog. His bum is firmly in the butter! 🛋️🧈❤️

This is the exact life we wish for all our working dogs: valued in the field and loved at home.

Enjoy the mountains, boy. The Greywing won’t know what’s coming. 🦅🌄

Here's the truth: Drive is instinct. Control is trained.

Without control, a high-drive dog becomes a liability in the field breaking at the flush, running in, ignoring the whistle when it matters most.

4 signs your gundog is ready for the field:

✅️Solid recall under distraction

✅️Steady on point without breaking

✅️Reliable retrieve to hand

✅️Responds to handler not the shot

And 2 signs it's NOT ready:

❌️Breaks at the flush

❌️ Ignores the whistle when fired up

If your dog ticks the red boxes, don't take it to the field. It will learn the wrong habits and they're incredibly hard to undo.

Why we introduce our puppies to water early 💦

At Boavida Gun Dogs, water confidence starts young but it's never rushed. We introduce water calmly and voluntarily in shallow, warm conditions where pups can explore at their own pace.

No throwing. No calling. No forcing. Just curiosity and positive experiences.

This early foundation builds confident, eager dogs later in life. When water is explored rather than forced, puppies learn that water = fun, not fear.

Live-in Gundog Apprenticeship at Boavida.
Start: March.

This is for someone serious about performance gundogs within a
professional hunting environment.

Not pet training.
Not a casual role.

You begin with foundational responsibilities within the working
operation.
You earn responsibility through performance.

You will assist in all aspects of training retrievers, spaniels,
versatile gundogs, and blood tracking dogs. You will learn the system
from foundation through field application.

Feedback is direct. Progress is expected.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• Active hunter
• PH licence held or in progress (strong preference)
• Calm under pressure
• Able to take correction without ego
• Willing to start at the bottom

This is a long-term apprenticeship.
Performance determines continuation.
