This ability comes from a unique anatomical feature called the stay apparatus, which allows them to lock their legs in place and relax their muscles without falling over. According to Equine World UK, the stay apparatus is a system of tendons and ligaments that stabilizes the horse’s joints, especially in the hind legs, so they can rest while remaining upright. This is especially important for prey animals like horses, who need to be able to wake and flee quickly if threatened.
